infinity interlude

i have a chance to buy a 5.1 interlude set. it includes 2-il60's, 2-il10's, 1-il36c, and 1-il120s subwoofer for 1500$. the owner travels alot so i dont think they have many hours on them, and he lives in a condo so maybe they havent been pushed too hard. i cant find any for sale right now and i have no idea what they originally went for. is this a good price or should i pass on them?

The Prelude line fell between the high-end Pre-lude MTS Towers and the mid-fi Alpha series. They were similar to the European Kappa line that I own. The floorstanders(IL-60) sold for approximately 2500 a pair although late in the in the game clearance prices of $1000 a pair could be found. The surround speakers I am unsure about but the original price was likely 1500 a pair with the center I believe around 900. The sub I know nothing about. At clearance prices the five speakers alone would likely have been 1500 or slightly more. These are great jazz speakers BTW.

thanks for the info. i have a pioneer vsx84tsxi, will this be enough to make them sound good or will i have to get a separate amp?

That is a difficult question for me to answer as I am unfamiliar with your receiver. However, these speakers are typically 6 ohm with sensitivity around 87. I drove my Kappa's with a HK receiver for awhile before upgrading to a Bryston amplifier. For me it was worth the upgrade but depending on the size and acoustics of your room as well as the intended use (I'm assuming music is very important to you as these speakers would be colossal overkill for HT) such as spl levels desired and type of music preference. Just an educated guess but your receiver should do just fine unless you require very very loud levels in a large great room.

yes music is as important to me as h.t. i watch alot of concert dvds as well as sacd's and dvda's. i bought this system last saturday and when i got there to pick it up i was pleasently surprised to find the only speakers he used in the 4 years he has had them are the il10's. the 60's,the 36c, and the 120s are all still sealed in the factory packaging. unfortunatly my wife will not let me set them up till after xmas.question, how will the r.a.b.o.s. work with the mcacc on my pioneer? do i turn off the mcacc?

The IL series shouldn't pose any problem for the Pioneer Elite receiver. I have a pair of Interlude 10s and I like them alot.

The amp section of most receivers usually are not beefy enough to adequately power big floor standers, let alone 5 speakers at the same time.

The problem with under-powering speakers is that you usually end up with the observation that your speakers are anemic in bass. Get an external amp for at least your 2 front speakers, you'll be amazed at how much bass your fronts are really capable of putting out.
