I have a budget of about $4-5000. i have a 50inch plasma already. Went to magnolias and they liked the Monito Audio RS6 speakers, with center. They also liked the pioneer elite vsx92 receiver. They also tacked on many cable wire charges, univ remote for $700 with RF controller and panamax max4300.

Any recommendations at this range? Any ideas on how to proceed or rankings/ratings or articles that might be helpful? Again, I'm new to all this. Thanks:D

they're not the only ones to like those speakers. The RS towers are among the most favored at the price point, although there are a good number of others. They also might be class leaders in finish, though I've never seen a Swan or AV123 in person.

Hmrz. If you don't know what features you want yet, you probably don't need much. Really. I have a dedicated HT with stadium seating, and I sure don't. I vote for a Yamaha 663 + amp if you're going Rs, for the same money as that Pio I imagine. If you need matrixing of HT hi def bitstreams, w/o clipping for HTPC, or better bass mgmt, or Audyssey, then I say Onkyo 705 + whatever amp. JMO for now.

They also tacked on many cable wire charges, univ remote for $700 with RF controller and panamax max4300.
Tell them to talk to the hand. Please check out the RF-20 + blaster by URC going for $75. Then buy everything you need at Monoprice for cabling. I don't have much opinion on power centers, but I get whatever is affordable at the time available on Amazon, which happened to be $130 Monster rack units, and a Belkin UPS.

Any recommendations at this range?
for towers, hm. I'd see what PSB you can hear, and Paradigm (which I've not heard). ID brands I'd look at would include AV123 and Swan (audio insider). Personally, at that budget, I would be REALLY itching to hear the Ascend Sierra-1, but they are bookshelves.

Any ideas on how to proceed or rankings/ratings or articles that might be helpful? Again, I'm new to all this. Thanks:D
Forget rankings for now. Just continue what you are doing. Which is to continue to visit stores and listen to speakers, and check in here every once in a while to share your experiences.

Once you get sick of going to stores, take a break for a couple of weeks. Then resume all over again. Well, that's my opinion. I had a personal goal to listen to 50 speakers before buying. However, I only made it to 25. I met double digit dealers. FWIW.

In that range you have many, many options. Don't worry about what the Magnolia folks liked, it only matters what you like.

I'd personally plan to break down the spending like this: $3000 speakers; $1000 sub; $1000 everything else (reciever/amp, cables, remote, surge protector, etc)

Speakers are far and away the most important component of any HT system. Spend as much as you can on them. Everything else can be compromised on first. You need to go out and audition all kinds of speakers. Find out what you like, then come back here and post your opinions, and you'll get some really good recommendations from other memebers. Bring the music or movies you want to listen to with you. Try to search out some HT boutique stores near you as well as the big box stores.

There's a few questions you should answer for everyone in order to get better help.

What size room is this going in?

What are your listening habits? Do you listen to more music, or watch more movies? Video Games? How loud do you like to listen? :D

How many speakers do you want? 5.1? 7.1? You only mentioned 3 speakers in your original post. Keep in mind that the front and then center speakers are more important than surrounds. It's helpful to have matching surround speakers for a balanced timbre, but you might even consider going 3.1 for now, and adding surrounds later (this will depend on your listening habits, and what speakers you select.)

You didn't mention a subwoofer. This sub need not match your speakers. Many many good subs can be found online. SVS or HSU are two examples. If your handy, you can even make your own DIY sub. Don't skimp here, the sub is a complete star for movie watching. You really can't go too big...unless the wife objects

Once you select speakers, then it's time to pick an appropriate reciever or pre-pro/amp to power them. Certain speakers require more robust amplification than others.

Repeated for effect. Two major points in my book.

There are plenty of speakers to choose from both at B&M stores to Internet Direct. It really comes down to taste and budget. If you are not extremely picky, you can even build one in the $1,500 range. But with your budget, you have plenty of options. Monitor Audio is well respected in the audio world. Have you listen to it and to other speakers to hear the differences of each speakers?

A few Speakers to look at:

B&M/Dealer:

Paradigm, Klipsch, Polk LSi, JBL Studio L Series, B&W, PSB, KEF, PSB

Internet Direct:

AV123.com, Aperionaudio.com, AxiomAudio, theaudioinsider.com

Great deals right now in my opinion are the Rockets Labor deal @ av123 or the Swan Diva Faux black at http://www.ozhometheater.com/ozht_prodcat_htspeakers.htm

Subwoofer options:

SVSound, HSU Research, Epik, Elemental Design, AV123 MFW

Forget about about anything that is named "Monster". Save those hundreds of dollars and put them to good use by adding it to your subwoofer budget. Best deals can be found at monoprice.com if you are looking for wires, hdmi, cables, banana plugs, etc.

If you want to get your feet wet before heading out, this is a good read:
Remember, these are just somone's opinions and thoughts.

Outstanding recommendation. :D

This is also a great deal. I can't think of to many, if any systems at this price point, and performance to compete.

Wow - that's a nice budget to work with. My advice is to get out and listen to everything you can within that budget. Don't let others tell you what to buy; you decide what to buy.

Some B&M brands to check out:

Dali
Paradigm
B&W
Monitor Audio (you liked the silver series so check out the gold)
Klipsch
Snell
PSB
Vienna Acoustics
Vandersteen
Linn
Canton
Totem

For Internet Direct:

Av123
Axiom Audio
The Audio Insider
Salk Sound
Ascend Acoustics
Aperion Audio
Selah Audio

These are just a few brands out there, so certainly audition others as well.
Happy hunting!

Just because Craigsub peer pressured you in to your speakers. j/k :D
Hey now... HAHA! :D:p

Nah, he didn't pressure me, but I do have him to thank, else I never would have heard the SongTower's.

I wonder where'd I'd be if I had never heard the ST's. Perhaps my "journey" would still be under way.

obsbyclouds has the right path to take on dividing your budget. That is a perfect way to split it up. Bring your OWN stuff to listen to and NEVER buy monster anything if you can help it.....Best advice is to listen to as many speakers as possible so you can be sure to get the system that is right for you.

:eek::eek::eek::eek: They have a store.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
Do they ever. They have a demo room where they coral their live stock too. Once the herd is in the coral, no interuptions are permitted.

Another thing, their 901's are no joke either but for $1,400 and the money to construct just the right room for them, you'd have to be an idiot to walk away laughing.

While I agree with putting most of your budget towards the speakers as they will make the biggest difference YOU HEAR, I wouldn't underestimate the importance of the amp section. Being a Yamaha fan I can only reference models that I know well, but the same should apply with other brands. The 663 seems to be a popular choice here, and definately a great rcvr, however there is a HUGE difference in the amplifiers once you get to the 1800/1900 (& up) level. I tell you this from personal experience from installing the various models frequently. Now, how important this is to you can also largely depend on your listening habits. If you like to listen at very loud levels the 1800/1900 (& up) will have the headroom and current to handle the dynamics & transients of the source material whereas the 663 will suffer and clip. However if you don't 'crank it up' so often then a rcvr like the 663 would be enough. Again I'm just using the Yamahas as an example because I know them well. The point being if you are considering getting fairly good speakers, then give them the amplification they deserve. Just my $0.02, good luck and have fun!

My advice is that, whatever you buy, don't ever, ever pay MSRP/sticker price!!!

Not even at the local HT store like Magnolia.

The fact is, they mark all products up, so you generally should get 20-30% off MSRP.:D

I like the Integra Pre-pro + amp set.

Speakers are so individualized that you really need to try them out in your own room. If Magnolia offers a free 30-Day return policy, you might try some speakers: Vienna Acoustics, Definitive, Mirage, MartinLogan, etc.
