In that range you have many, many options. Don't worry about what the Magnolia folks liked, it only matters what you like.
I'd personally plan to break down the spending like this: $3000 speakers; $1000 sub; $1000 everything else (reciever/amp, cables, remote, surge protector, etc)
Speakers are
far and away the most important component of any HT system. Spend as much as you can on them. Everything else can be compromised on first. You need to go out and audition all kinds of speakers. Find out what you like, then come back here and post your opinions, and you'll get some really good recommendations from other memebers. Bring the music or movies you want to listen to with you. Try to search out some HT boutique stores near you as well as the big box stores.
There's a few questions you should answer for everyone in order to get better help.
What size room is this going in?
What are your listening habits? Do you listen to more music, or watch more movies? Video Games? How loud do you like to listen?
How many speakers do you want? 5.1? 7.1? You only mentioned 3 speakers in your original post. Keep in mind that the front and then center speakers are more important than surrounds. It's helpful to have matching surround speakers for a balanced timbre, but you might even consider going 3.1 for now, and adding surrounds later (this will depend on your listening habits, and what speakers you select.)
You didn't mention a subwoofer. This sub need not match your speakers. Many many good subs can be found online. SVS or HSU are two examples. If your handy, you can even make your own DIY sub. Don't skimp here, the sub is a complete star for movie watching. You really can't go too big...unless the wife objects
Once you select speakers,
then it's time to pick an appropriate reciever or pre-pro/amp to power them. Certain speakers require more robust amplification than others.
