Indecisive on Denon

Hey Glockfan,

I appreciate the offer, but I have to pass. I may have something that will work for $800.00
Since every dollar you spend on the receiver takes away a dollar from your speaker budget, I recommend going cheaper on the receiver than that.

Barry, what features are you looking to get? I totally agree about going as inexpensive as you can while still getting what you want...but I'm not sure that we know what you want (sorry if I missed you posting that already).

Adam, I'm not sure what I want. I saw a $2500.00 Denon 4520 for $1500.00 and almost wet myself. What I would like, is an amp/AVR can handle a 4 ohm load. My Onkyo 608 has been a good performer for me with my EMP 6 ohm rated speakers. I am afraid that if I go to a lower ohm rated speaker the Onkyo will not be able to handle the possible dips to 2 ohms. And, the speakers I have been looking at are all 4 ohm.

So I want something reasonably priced to keep my speaker budget on the high side. I'm seriously considering a Yamaha RX A830. It has pre outs so I can add an external amp to have the power on hand for any dips. If I'm reading this correctly, it seems that the A830 can handle dips to 2 ohms;

Rated Output Power (20Hz-20kHz, 2ch driven)100 W (8 ohms, 0.09% THD)
Dynamic Power per Channel (8/6/4/2 ohms)140 / 180 / 210 / 250 W

<tbody style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
</tbody>

Of course I'm always open, to most, suggestions.

It's less a problem of a receiver being able to handle a 4 ohm load than speakers rated at 4 ohms having nasty impedance and phase swings. That's the reason why receivers have trouble and companies don't rate their receivers at 4 ohms unless they can handle 2 or 1 ohm loads for at least a little while.

Honestly, if the speakers you end up going with don't have any abnormal impedance or phase nastiness you really don't need to go wild with an amp or receiver. Like the Phil 3s are rated at 4 ohms but don't really drop below that and don't have any wild phase swings and the vast majority of receivers would b able to drive them with zero issue whether rated for 4 ohms or not. I would pick speakers first, maximize your budget there and then decide if you need an amp/new receiver. You may not (unless you really want one).

Sure that would be the 'proper' way to do it. This may sound crazy, but for some reason it seems to me if I don't have the amp(s) first, then I won't be prepared when I get my speakers. I know it's ridiculous.

I am getting closer to making a decision on speakers though.

As always, I appreciate all the comments.

While I preach the "rational" way of doing things, it doesn't mean it's what I do myself :D

You should probably just get a pair of XPR-1's for them and you'll be all set.

I'm not too sure about Emotiva. When I called them last year I got a bad sales person. Plus, a few people here that I respect have had problems with Emotiva gear so that also has kind of soured me on them.

I'm considering this: avahifi - Synergy 240/3 Amplifier

With this as the pre: RX-V675 - RX-V - AV Receivers - Audio & Visual - Products - Yamaha United States

I've been a little iffy on emo as well, but then again as much as I love Outlaw I haven't had great CS experiences with them either. That AVA will be rock solid and they've always had great CS. It maybe out of your price range, but if you're looking for a 3 channel you might want to check out AB's HT lineup. If Bob is still running his promotion they are 50% off the listed prices on the website, which means that a 3 channel amp at 300 WPC is $2000. It may be worth it for you to check it out, maybe not.

There's a lot of information here plus a bunch of pictures of the internals:Custom Built Amps - AB Systems Cinema Series Amplifiers | AVForums.com - UK Online

Then the website is: Home -

I have a couple pro amps from Bob and he's always been really easy to work with. I've e-mailed a few times to help me trouble shoot things and it's always been him who responded. Unlike Outlaw, he was more than willing to help me trouble shoot via e-mail to avoid sending it to him in CA. Just a thought.

Care to take a guess who else suggested AB to me? I'll give you a hint. He also lives in New York. :D

I'll check them out again. Thanks!

How is Walter doing? He hasn't posted in a while.

Well that figures :D

Last I talked to him, we were trying to find a time when he could get out to CT to pick up some gear. I believe he's redoing his whole surround system soon, but is starting with two new subs. He's just been so busy at work he can't get away for a couple days.

He's also giving me a couple more of his old shure amps. My GF's Dad is going to work on them get a pair running from the 4 Walter is giving me so I can use them for the desk speakers or whatever else I've got by then.

I would also suggest the ATI 3000 series or the Parasound A31.
I have the A51 and it is a wonderful amp. It is very clean at lower power levels as well which you might be surprised at how often you listen to 1 watt.

Street price of an A31 should be in the mid-2K's

I would get the ATI AT1805 (180WPC x 5Ch amp) for $1300 (MSRP $2400).

http://www.classicaudioparts.com/index.php/amplifiers/ati-at1805-five-channel-x-180-watt-amplifier-b-stock-120v.html

When HTM tested the Revel Salon2 5.1 system, they used an ATI 150 WPC and it sounded great. I think Irv used a 60WPC ATI on his Salon2 (to test out). I use a 60WPC ATI for my dual RBH SX-1010N subwoofers.

As far as AVR, I think you need to call Electronics Expo and ask about their store demo (full 3 YR warranty) Denon 3313, which I think they can be convinced to sell you for $600 shipped or Amazon is selling brand new 3313 for $800.
