In-Wall Surround 6" or 8" - 2way or 3way?

Hi Folks, after waiting many years I am adding on a new media room that is 18' x 30'. I am still blasting my 30 year old JBL L-250s as my front L+R. I have a solid new JBL center array speaker but I want to go new for all of my surrounds and match them as I do so. In my process I have several questions.

1) My amp/reciever allows for 9.2. Are the front high speakers worth the cost and effort to add to my room?

2) For the surrounds... do I need to look at 2-way or 3-way?

3) Should I look at getting an 8" woofer or 6".

I am running two HSU VTF-15 subwoofers in my set up and my JBLs sport 14s, so low end is not an issue.

My listening is 50/50 movies - music. I love big and loud but targeting more fidelity and experience.

I am open to recommendataions as to brand/models as well.
Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on the soon-to-be media room. That's got to be exciting.

I'll throw in some answers/opinions below, but IMO none of your questions will have definitive answers. You could go different ways and still be happy with the results. Luckily, matching the fronts to the surrounds isn't critical, as it will probably be tough to find a tonal match to your JBL L-250s. Btw, how does your new center sound paired with them? Also, does your receiver have auto calibration (e.g. Audyssey, MCAAC)? That can go a long way to getting the speakers to blend better.

1) My amp/reciever allows for 9.2. Are the front high speakers worth the cost and effort to add to my room?
Some people here have said they like it, while others have said that it didn't do anything for them. My recommendation is to use some spare speakers (if you have any) to try it out first before committing to it.

2) For the surrounds... do I need to look at 2-way or 3-way?
I use 2-way bookshelves and am happy with them.

3) Should I look at getting an 8" woofer or 6".
My bookshelves have 6.5" woofers and work great. What you'll want to do is make sure that the speakers you are getting (a) sound good to you and (b) play sufficiently low in frequency to match well with your subs. My NHT 1.5s are rated down to 53Hz at -3dB, which is plenty low for my 80Hz crossover point to my subs.

Thanks... after 50+ years of listening to "recorded media" through electronics considered 'cutting edge' through the decades I am very aware that all of this is subjective and really to the point... a personal taste based on our uniquely designed ears and brains.

Yes, I am using Audyssey for calibration and surprisingly my center pairs very well with the JBLs.

As for the high fronts... I guess my real question is if this is a fad like quad was in the 60s-70s or is it here to stay for more digital recordings. I guess I could wire for them but not cut out the sheetrock and maybe test as you suggested.

My questions as to 2-way/3-way and 6"-8" has more to do with if I have my low end covered should I spend my surround dollars on power handling/sound reproduction (effects) and taking advantage of DTS/DVD audio than being concerned about the sides and rears covering more frequency ranges (lower).

Thanks again for your opinions.
