Greetings!! I have a blank slate and need some help...Finishing basement and want a nice HT set up. I've planned about 2 grand for speakers but they have to be in wall or in ceiling. I listened to some speakercraft in ceiling and in wall today. Okay, but not to impressed with the in ceiling. Very bright!! The in wall seemed warmer but missed some of the highs. I was viewing 300 and listening to Watermelon Man.

My reference is 15-year-old Vandersteen class B towers. I'm interested in Pioneer Elite EX, tSc, Aperion, Martin Logan or whatever...Not picky about brand I just want good sound for movies and music. THANKS!!

Scratch in ceiling. Use good in walls of you have to.

What in-walls do you suggest??
I don't audition in walls, and I do not recommend speakers I have not evaluated. If I do need an in wall then I design and build it.

This center speaker is a through wall.

These B & W in walls have a good reputation however.

5 or 7? How large is your space? Which model SpeakerCraft, as they have different product lines? Most manufacturers produce in-structure products these days. If the SCs were bright, I'm thinking Paradigm AMS/SA lines might work. I also have an affinity for Def Tech, but your ears may not.

The room is 13' wide by about 17' deep. The depth could vary depending on how we layout some interior elements. Seating will probably be 6'-10' from screen. The ceilings are 8' tall too. I was planning on wiring for 7.1 but initially setting it up as 5.1 for now. Planning on Denon 1910 or similar Pioneer Elite amp.

I listened to (3) Speakercrafts AIM8Three(s) that were center and front L&R with Speakercraft MTTwo(s) as rear L&R in a 16x16 room. Fronts were very bright with a hollow flat sound stage. Switched to (3) of the MTTwo(s) across the front and it sounded much warmer, still a bit small though. These were all paired with a Martin Logan 8" Dynamo sub woofer.

As I stated earlier, I've got about a 2 grand budget for speakers and I'm not married to any brand. However, I've heard many good things about some of the internet direct speaker companies.

That brings me to today....I'm used to my Vandersteens but know that those were not made for this layout and would like an in-wall speaker that has a good sound stage with less brightness (not inadequate highs) and good mids to lower range. Am I asking for too much for 2 grand??? Please help!!

I think you are unless you want to build them yourself.

Thanks for all the input!!! Building may be more of a project then I'm willing to give. I'll probably end up with something from Aperion, Axiom or Martin Logan. Good companies from what I've read, but now I just have to listen to them to get a good feel.

Thanks again!!
