In-wall cable-tubing: firecode-approved ?

Hi there,

A massive remodel is in progress, upstairs is gutted, and I'm about to wire for in-ceiling speakers, internet connections in different rooms, etc. I'm considering running tubing inside some of the walls to allow for future wiring upgrades.

My question: Do I need to be concerned about what my tubing is made from, from an inspection standpoint? (I'm thinking that since in-wall speaker cable has a "fire resistant" covering, it's quite possible that smart inspectors don't want me running my in-wall wire through just any type piping...)

Thoughts?

Why not use Smurf tube? In-wall and especially plenum rated cabling can't have PVC in it, so you may want to use CPVC.

You could do one of two things.
Run EMT,(thin wall metal conduit) it's a little more expensive; though it will pass any inspection, if properly terminated.

The other choice, is to ask both, the building and electrical inspectors, if PVC would ok.
It will also need a connector and plastic bushing, to be considered properly terminated.
All conduit should be big enough to pass cable jacks, etc.

With the NEC, the local authority has jurisdiction. They can require something above and beyond the code.

Thanks for the guidance. I've read on different blogs about a number of different flex-tubes (versus PVC) being used, and was intrigued. Went to Home Depot yesterday and determined that most of the flexible tubing probably wasn't going to make the fire marshall happy.

I'll look into these ideas more.

Bill.
