Looking to purchase new speakers. I'm in the early stages of this investment so I haven't listened to anything, anywhere. What I don't want to happen is this: Go to the local A/V store and drop $1,000 on a system that I have listened to and "satisfied" with. Or, I could drop $1,000 on a system via Internet-exclusive retailers that sound like a "$5,000" system but not know what they sound like (I know they offer 30 days but shipping?). Blah-blah-blah. I think you get the idea.

I'm just looking for some honest opinions that can steer me in the direction of some good, quality, bang for the buck sound.

My listening habits are 75/25 music to movies.

What I'm looking for are: Fronts and Center
-Higher sensitivity (not a necessity)
-Deep, low bass (nothing boomy)
-Clear mids and highs
-8 ohms
-Dynamics

Well $1000 internet direct speakers won't necessarily sound any better than the $1000 you'll get at the store, usually they're not that much different IMO. The big benefit of internet direct is at the lower end I think.

So what is your budget exactly, $1000 I take it? Do you want floorstanders or standmounts for your fronts? If you listen to mostly music what do you listen to and for the people who want to know I'll just ask, what equipment will you be hooking this up to and how big is the listening space?

edit: removed suggestions assuming a $1000 budget.... also, subwoofer?

I'm upgrading my whole system except for my sub (Def-Tech Pro 200 TL).

For the receiver, I'm looking at the Yamaha HTR-5890 or Outlaw 1070.

As far as floor standing or bookshelfs? It doesn't really matter...just the lower frequencies seem to pop more in the smaller units???????

You might consider ordering a pair of the Onix X-LS and SVS bookshelf speakers for an in-home audition. Return the loser during the 30-day trial period. The 5.1 system from both companies for <$1k. If you don't want to buy stands, the floorstander version of the Onix (X-sls) will be out soon for just over $300/pair.
