Hey Michael, I'm new to both this forum and the HT thing but in doing research towards replacing my 20 year old TV later this summer with a renovated and equipped HT, I came across your situation.

Like you, I'm in Canada and find the difference, on certain components, to US prices verging on criminal.

Re. the Onkyo 805, it too is on my radar and I was disheartened to read that eCost will not ship to Canada. FYI, I came across a post from another Canadian who bought one through an eBay storefront. It seems I can't post a link for you because I'm too new to the forum but go to Ebay and search for TX-SR805; the seller I'm referring to is called E Warehouse and sells them new & boxed for about $620. If you're not adverse to eBay, it looks like an alternative for a new 805 at an attractive price.

I have no previous experience or any relationship with this seller.

Peter
I totally agree with the concept of the prices up here verging on criminal. The cheapest I found the 805 for was $1100CDN. That is $500 +/- difference for what you can regularly get it for in the US online.

I am not adverse to E-Bay at all. Only issue I have is that most sellers, all I have dealt with, will not ship via USPS so you never know what you are going to pay at the door. The warranty is another issue, small, but still an issue. Have not really been one to have electronics go bad, but with my luck the one without the warranty will be the one to go .
My other thing with E-Bay is that you just never know what you are going to get and being up here in Canada, shipping things back and forth can eat up any savings you may have received. My eyes are still looking on e-bay, but I would rather deal elsewhere for a purchase this big.

I will keep you posted.

Now off to look at the 905 :D

OUCH!! $140 for FedEx International economy shipping.

Cheers all
Michael

Well I have the 905 sitting in my cart but am trying to find ANY information anywhere about FedEx, only shipping option, extra fees and charges.

If I did dishes and washed the floor for a month (at least) I might be able to swing the $1500+ US, but if I all of a sudden get stung with a multi-hundred dollar bill from FedEx for brokeage fees and whatnot, it would be game over for me.

Yes, the Marantz look like a great receiver as well, not sure if I could stretch the bedget that far though, started at $1000 CDN :D

Thanks for all the posts

Yeah, Accessories4Less is also Marantz authorized. I'm thinking of getting a Marantz projector in the near future-- you know when the $9K VP-15S1 becomes $3K?:D

So this site is authorized for Onkyo & Marantz.

Now the proud owner of a ....

Hi all,

Well I pulled the triggered. Went buy a local A&B Sound at lunch and they had an un-advertised sale on the Yamaha RX-V1800. Regular price of $1299 CDN on for $990 CDN. :D

They had three left and the sale went until they ran out so I scooped it up. Now just to get my basement done so I can enjoy it :(

Cheers all and thanks for the help and posts

Thanks much, I am sure I will.

Would have really liked the/an Onkyo, but I was very leery about shipping it across the border and getting stung and the prices up here are outrageous.

Cheers

I think you made the right choice. I would buy locally whenever possible. It's a lot safer and a lot easier to return should you need to. I know GlocksRock loves his Yamaha 1800, and so do a lot of people.

Yeah I think I did as well. Tons of connections, the latest lossless sound formats, it looks sleek, I got a good deal, and best of all, I got WAF when I brought it home and spoke about the price (without even fudging it a little :D)

I prefer shopping locally as well, unless the deal is just too good to pass up. The gentleman who asissted me at A&B Sound was knowledgeable and not pushy in any way, especially about extended warranty, unlike some other big box local chains .

Very happy with the whole thing.

I appreciate all the input and suggestions and feel like I made a much more informed choice in AVR's this time.

Cheers all
Michael
