i'm looking to put a pair of speakers in the ceiling of my kitchen. half of the kitchen has the second floor above it so the joist cavities will be empty, the other half is dead space and is/should be insulated (i won't know for sure until i pull the ceiling down). can in-ceiling speakers be installed in an insulated ceiling? are there any precautions or installation techniques?

Just make sure the insulation is not touching the speaker.

no insulation touching the speaker but is vapour barrier ok?
Mazer where did you get the plastic enclosures for your install?
Are enclosures necessary/recommended? using speakers for ambient sound in the kitchen not HT.

You dont need to wory about a back-box for your application. Just pop them in there and enjoy.

Nothing touching the speaker.

Plastic? Those enclosures are $125 each. You don't need them for surrounds, or background music.

Some in-ceilings have enclosures. I have four Mirage Omnican 6's for side and rear surrounds. Above the ceiling is attic space with a deep layer of blown-in insulation, so I wanted enclosed speakers. The Omnicans sound great.

It's Your Choice/prefrence

Adding insulation or placing a speaker in an enclosure usually results in a "warmer Sound" or a sound with deeper or round bass. If U have 4 X 8 or deeper ceiling joists you can make an enclosure with 3 piece of wood. measure the width between the ceiling rafters. Let's assume its 16 in. If you are installing a 6 inch go to your local sterio shop and measure the demintions of a 6 inch speaker. " You dont have to be exact, you are trying to get close to the size of that box. Cut 2 pieces for the sides using 3/4 ply : 5 1/2 inch X 16 inch next, Cut 8 inch X 16 for the top. Screw together to make a "U" shape. Hammer between the rafters using. The drywall of the ceiling makes the front of the box. The box improves the bass and prevents the sound from leaking into the floors/rooms above
