In-Ceiling recommendations sought....

Moving to a new home in Jan 06.
I have an M&K 750THX system I am very pleased with, and no hurry to replace.
The basic problem is stands for the surrounds is not an option, I could 'hang' my existing M&K surrounds from the ceiling, and aim as required.
But I much prefer having in-ceiling speakers installed for the surrounds. The least inexpensive in-ceiling made by M&K are a good $800 a pair (SW-50). I'd rather spend about half that on other quality in-ceiling speakers.
I am open to suggestions. While I believe in having quality speakers in my system, it would seem some savings could be made in surrounds with little sacrifice in performance.

This is the only in-ceiling speaker to get. Go audition for yourself. They will more then meet, in fact they will exceed your expectations.

Actually, I've been checking those out. I guess a more general question is how important is timbre matching for surrounds?
My front 3 are perfectly matched.

It is always nice to have all speakers matching. As long as the front three are matching you will be OK with different surrounds.

I just had an interesting suggestion on another forum. Take my existing surrounds, have them hung on a joist above ceiling baffle. I could use a flex mount and aim them as needed.

What Forum? You could do that. But if you want a clean install I would go the other way. And you stated in your opening post you didn't want to "hang" your speakers.

I don't want to hang them from the ceiling. But inside the ceiling on a joist and covering the hole with a typical round grille.
But I agree, it's more hassle to mount them that way, and sealing the opening between the speaker and the cutout to avoid drafts, etc. The pop-ins like the Speakercrafts are much easier to be sure, and the difference in results should be similar.

O I see you want to mount the speaking inside the drywall of the ceiling?
How do you mount it, and keep it from moving? How to you aim it at the listening position? Or is the sound suppose to find the listeners ears? :D Unless you have BiPole speakers that wouldn't work.
I don't know I don't think that suggestion was a good one. But that's why we all have opinions. It's all good.

I don't see aiming it as a problem at all, depending on how close it is to the surface of the ceiling, it certainly could be rotated on a bracket and aimed accordingly. In fact, M&K makes appropriate rotating brackets that would work well mounted on the inside of a joist. But it's still a 'square peg in a round hole' so in all other aspects, I find it quite impractical.
