Hello, I have a few in-ceiling needs and could use some recommendations! Trying to keep budget a bit on the lower end, I know there's only so much to expect from an in-ceiling, but I don't want to just end up with a low-end cheap sounding speaker from CostCo either. I'm hoping there's some good value and decent sound to be found by knowing the right place to look.

The first environment is an outdoor patio, I've got two in-ceiling speaker prewires that I'm going to hook into the second zone of my receiver, I rebroadcast the inside TV/music to the patio sports bar style. The patio is smaller, maybe 17'x17' (guessing a bit), but fortunately we're a few blocks away from all the city noise so they don't need to be abnormally loud. It's covered enough that a special outdoor speaker isn't really needed, roof extends far enough to protect it from the elements. Obviously, these would stand on their own, no sub to add bass support, so trying to find something with a bit wider range.

The second application is side and rear speakers to compliment a home theater system that has Magnepan 1.7s as front L/R, eventually getting a Magnepan center channel as well, but just don't have the room size to justify using the MMGW's on the ceiling. Need something more compact in a traditional loudspeaker that can keep up with the Magnepans.

Even just knowing speakers to avoid would be helpful, or general brands to look into...doing homework is half the fun, thanks!

Well,if you have to go with in-ceiling speakers get ones that you can angle. Speakers that fire straight down are useless.
Something like these JBLs...LS360c.

Check out aperion. They have in ceiling and in wall speakers as well as indoor/outdoor speakers for around $150 each. I have 2 sets of in wall, and 2sets of in ceiling speakers from them and they sound great. Also, their customer service is great. They give you a 30 day no questions asked return policy

A friend of mine put in MartinLogan Helos 100 ceiling speakers that you can angle. They actually sound pretty good. Just a thought.
