Can a single 4 ohm dual coil sub be used with an 8 ohm A/V receiver?

I am assuming the sub is not powered. It can be connected but 4 ohm will take twice the power of 8 ohms. If it is a powered sub, then the point is moot you connect to the LFE or SUB Out which is prepro level and it doesn't matter.

I'd wager the receiver would not be up to the task, unless it was rated for four ohms, and assuming you are wiring the speaker to the receiver. As njedpx3 said, if you are running a powered sub, then it is a moot point, as you would run it from the sub pre-out on the back of the receiver.

I haven't decided if it's gonna be powered or not yet. But thanks for the advice.

You just made your decision....

It needs to be powered. Even if the receiver could handle it, the sub wont get the signal it needs to operate in the frequencies its intended to, unless of course its hooked up to another receiver. You need to get a separate amp and use the sub/lfe preout.

Yes- connect the voice coils in series but if you want to try using it with one amp channel connected to each voice coil, it's not the way they're designed to be used. If one coil fails, one amp channel will likely take out the other.
