I'm tired of seeing these "which receiver" posts

I'm really tired of seeing these, "Which receiver should I buy with my $xxx.xx budget" posts. There seems to be about 20 a week and I feel they really take away from actual conversation.

Should we just put together a poll? Gather 5 receivers in every $200 price range and post THOSE choices somewhere.

For example:

$0 - $200
$201 - $400
$401 - $600
$601 - $800
$801 - $1000
$1001 - $2000
$2001+

Get a good list down, then just open up a poll. Perhaps revise it every once in a while.

I think this would help with a good majority of "newbie" posts.

Good idea.

Which receiver should I get in the $801 - $1000 category? Online pricing. ;)

The problem is no one knows how to SEARCH for them selves. If they needed to search for a price which would then give them food.....they would starve....yes, that will do:rolleyes:

I agree with you, Audioholics needs a reciever recommendation list.

I'm sick of seeing those posts also.

People definitely need to start doing their own research. Receivers are a personal thing just like speakers. First, only the buyer knows what inputs/outputs he needs. Then there is all the processing options including a gazillion dsp modes. If you like to tweak things you really need to do you research to find out what each receiver can and can't do. You need to make sure the receiver has enough power to drive your speakers sufficiently, etc . . .

Heck, if you have time to describe all of these things in a post, you are better off spending that time surfing for information yourself.

I see this in other types of forums too, for example, on a off-road site I frequent we may get 20 posts a month asking which tire fits my truck with ____ amount of lift or which is the best mud-terrian. All topics we have discussed numerous times but people want an answer specific to there needs, even if the answer is only a few clicks away, I think it's just human nature.

Besides if the, "what speaker/reciever/amp should I get", inquries went away, what would we have to complain about?:D

why the Bose cult works

Perhaps this is one of the main reasons the cult of Bose has so many followers. You don't need to listen, you don't need to look, you don't need to research, and you don't need to think. Just let Bose make your decisions for you and everything will be alright.

At least the people are asking their repetitive questions in a forum where they will get smart answers.

What's cool about researching on the internet is that some can have the Fillet Minion for the same price that most will spend on the Ramen Noodles!

What irks me is whenever somebody will ask the same question(s) on two or more forums of the same site or what really annoys me is....."URGENT, NEED HELP" or "IMPORTANT" is their heading in a forum, my first thought is 'It's called 9-1-1 for a reason partner!'

Hey I have an excuse for being senile, I'm old! ;)

I usually just skip the 'which receiver?' posts. Yes, they can be annoying when the same old questions have beeen answered a few hundred times, but there are alot of questions that fall into that category.

1. I just bought receiver x and these speakers, will they work for my room?. Maybe it's just me, but if I had a question like that I would ask BEFORE I went out and bought everything.

2. I just bought receiver x, does it have this feature I need? Once again, something that should have been asked before you buy it. This type of question is also easily answered for yourself by going to the manufacturers website and reading the manual. Searching the forums would also likely turn up the answer.

3. I have receiver x and I just bought dvd player y that doesn't have this feature I now realize I need. What do I need to make them work together?. Once again, shouldn't you ask questions, read the manuals, see the equipment in person, etc and find out if they work together for your needs before you buy?

Then there are the technical questions. I have answered queries about 'reference level', digital audio, formats and decoders and the like dozens of times, yet I continue to do it. Those I don't mind so much, but just like the receiver questions one could search and get all the answers.

It's just the nature of forums. We can pick and choose which questions to answer...

No need to ask about Bose. Just type Bose in search and leave the rest of the forum alone.:D

The devils advocate

To play the devils advocate, there have been quite a few good threads that started with "I have $299 to purchase a good HT system, what should I get?" and ended up being verying interesting as the thread morphed into something entirely different.

Also a large number of threads on this forum are started by newbies and we always need new recruites IMO. That being said, FAQs are always a good thing to direct them to. Just a slightly different take on the issue at hand.

Some of the problem is the layout of the forums. The search "button" should be more obvious (bigger and in a differnt color) The same can be said for the "Please READ before starting a new thread!" post. The "beginners and audiophytes" section is at the bootom of the page when it sould be at the top.

I have also been toying with a "10 BEST" suggestion post. To go along with the sites recomended systems, we the people could vote on our favorite components in different classes. Kind of car and driverish but we the members would vote. We could do it once a year. A couple of months after some major product releases would be good so everyone has time to get out and see the products. I don't have all of it ironed out so I've been dragging my feet, but since this has come up, there is no time like the present! So off i go to post my suggestion...

You guys know that there is a sticky on this, right?

Yeah, I think Hopjohn's post should be placed on a sticky on all areas..

Which to buy..please help (sacarsm to follow)

Some of the posts admittedly get just about as silly as what follows. Maybe new posters can use the following as an example of what to search for before posting a redundant thread.

I could really use some help

I'm looking for the best hamburger I can buy for under $2.00. I really like the Burger King Whopper and the McDonald's Big Mac but am hearing good things about the Wendy's single also. Can anyone help me determine what the best burger is? I'm kind of a newbie and need help being pointed in the right direction. I think that Big Mac is not grilled, so doesn't it keep that nice beefy, fatty appeal? Also, it comes with its own proprietary sauce, or is it just thousand island dressing? I like the idea that Whopper can be custom built, but I'm not much of DIY kinda guy, so maybe I can get some expertise in that area. I think the Wendy's Single has more of solid build to it, and it seems to come with the widest array of condiments in its stock configuration. Then of course I guess I should consider the quality of the the condiments that going into making these fine pieces of goodness. I mean if you don't use name brand condiments how good can the end result really be. I think that the Heinz vs. Hunt's arguments holds some weight. And what of the lettuce, is it plain vanilla iceburg, or do any of them use a finer quality leaf? Hellman's mayonaise seems to be a front runner, but maybe their is another brand that is capable of producing a better flavor. For my money I think right now the Whopper with its special 99 cents sale is the value leader, but maybe spending twice as much might be worth it for all the extra bells and whisltes you get with the other burgers on the menu. The hot Wheels cars in the value meals or the monopoly piece at certain times of the year during promotions are quite a nice feature. This is all so much to think about that it has become quite overwhelming. Any help would be greatly appeciated.
I always thought that this was funny....
