thanx
i just got him a referb bd player so he will not be happy to buy another player.
but he may want the movie bad enough to buy one. so, how much would a cheap region free player be ? he has a new 32" panny tv.
maybe that movie could be burned off the net ?
A cheap region free DVD player might be had for about as little as any DVD player. But you might want to go a step up so that it works well. Use the link for the "hacks" that I gave above to check on any player you are considering buying. Unless it is an upconverting player, you will probably want it to be able to convert to NTSC, though it would be better if his TV supports PAL because PAL has more lines of resolution than NTSC (NTSC is the old TV standard in the U.S., prior to digital TV), so converting to NTSC involves throwing away lines of resolution (as well as changing the frame rate).
You can also buy online a player from some store that has already "hacked" the player for you, but that tends to cost more, and if you are good at following directions, not generally a good value for your money if you can "hack" it yourself.
As for burning it off of the internet, I cannot help you with that, and probably it would be illegal to do so (but I really don't know if it can be found that way). With the region issue, you are buying a legitimate copy of the movie, though one made for selling to another place. So copyright holders are being paid, if they hold the copyright in that other place.
In my case, I have an Oppo DV-983H DVD player that I have "hacked" (i.e., entered a code via its remote that I found online at the link above), and it is good at upconverting, and it upconverts the picture, then converts to 60 Hz (the U.S. version of HD, whereas that disc is 50 Hz [i.e., 50 frames per second]), so there is no loss of resolution. But it is no longer available, and was a relatively expensive DVD player.
