If a receiver cannot decode SACD, what does that really mean?

I'm thinking about purchasing a new Yamaha RX-V2600 receiver for my new Klipsch reference bookshelf setup. I know SACD and DVD-A are both unsuccessful formats, but I still want to be able to play them both on my new receiver.

I read in another thread that the Yamaha receiver can't decode SACD. What does this mean? I was thinking about buying the Yamaha DVD-C750 to play my media (it plays SACD, DVD, DVD-A). Doesn't the player do all the decoding? What's the advantage of having a receiver that can decode SACD by itself? With that setup (RX-V2600 & DVD-C750) will I not be able to fully take advantage of SACD?

Virtually no receivers can decode SACD and DVA-Audio

These formats must be decoded in the player and relayed to the receiver via six analog inputs.

Just make sure ther receiver you decide on has these inputs and you'll be fine.

That depends on the player and the receiver.

Basically all it means is the SACD chip(s) required to do the decoding are not present in the receiver. AFAIK, all players that do SACD and DVD-A can do the decoding. Few receivers have the ability to do this however.

"Unsucsessful" maybe in getting a big market share, but I would hardly call them unsucessful formats.

I realize that there a few, very few specifically manufactured player/receiver pairs that can do this decoding at the receiver level. That's where the "virtually" comes into play. Perhaps you can offer more advice.

What percentage of SACD and DVD-Audio players do NOT decode and pass analog outputs?

Conversely, what percentage of receivers DO possess the ability to decode SACD and DVD-Audio? Care to list a few? Do they require a specific player? What are their prices?

That's true. :)

You're not going to expand on your original answer?

Generally, when someone contradicts another poster here, particularly with a snippy one line remark, it's polite to at least provide some details when requested.

Is that it?

Can they be used as standalone units still be decoded in other receivers?

Can that receiver decode other SACD/DVD-Audio players?

How much are they?

Gee, so far it sure looks like my "virtually" is holding pretty pat, doncha think?

I don't know everything about VSX-AX4AVi and VSA-AX10Ai receivers. I'm only saying that they can decode DSD.

Also all Denon's receivers that have the DENON LINK 3rd edition have the ability to decode DSD. And all their players with DENON LINK 3rd edition can transfer SACD and DVD-A digitally

cheers:)

Also I believe any player and receiver that has an IEEE1394 connection can also pass DVD-A and SACD digitally.

These can be seen on many higher priced units like the Denon 3910 player and upwards and the Denon 4806 receiver and upwards. I'm sure many other brands use these connections on some of their models so you could mix and match brands.

cheers:)

Sony DVP-NS9100ES and SCD-XA9000ES can transfer DSD via i.LINK.

Can, yes, but is it mandatory that the receiver be able to decode these formats?

Think carefully about this answer. That was the crux of my initial statment, and my initial reply to the one liner.

My 3805 can decode DSD as can many, if not all of the receivers I have stated

cheers:)

And again, I ask...

Is it mandatory that a receiver be able to decode SACD and DVD-Audio for one to avail themselves of that media?

Think carefully now. You didn't last time.

No need to be patronizing, Mark.

I never said anyone needs anything more than multichannel analogue inputs to enjoy DVD-A or SACD. I was just showing that there are many receivers on the market that can decode DSD

Read carefully now. You didn't last time:eek: :D

As the technonlogy trickles down, assuming these formats last, more and more receivers will have it built in, just like DD/DTS is today. But, at this time, it's far from a given that one can simply purchase any player and any receiver and expect them to live happily ever after.

Yes, too true, and now we have a few new formats to trickle down. It's a never ending cycle

cheers:)
