For that price range, go with the Klipsh Promedia speakers, they are amazing, I have both the GMX and the other THX certified ones, and they are both awesome.

These are very good speakers for about $100 shipped:
Sony SS-B3000 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers

I have them installed in my garage system and also as surrounds in my game room.

If you could up your budget to $219, here and some excellent speakers:
Cambridge Audio S30 ( the extra $50 plus shipping would be worth it!)

Are you talking about powered computer speaker systems, or "real" speakers that require an amplifier or receiver?

That is an excellent question, with a huge impact on the suggestions we make.

The Behringer B2030P is a great little monitor. Aside from a small air leak in the cab that can be easily fixed, they're superb passive monitors (for the price of course, the cabinets are still not anything to be desired) with surprisingly good off axis response.

The best part? $130
