hmmm, i didn't get that last part
was that in english?
all the numbers flew over my head. omg, i think if i'm not as obsessed as before about this stuff, my head won't process it.
Heh. mike, it's actually super simple, lemme try again. (this is for the concept, you won't TRULY know your brightness, FL, without measuring tools, but just for the concept) . . .
BRIGHTNESS / SIZE (SQ FT) = FOOT LAMBERTS (FL)
The "standard" for FL, for both a commercial theater, and THX in home, is 16 FL. However, many can be satisfied with significantly dimmer, since our eyes do adjust to whatever extent.
So, therefore, the 15 or so FL with a 2.0 gain would be closer to that THX rec, rather than the 7.4 FL with a huge screen, with no gain, and the Panny.
Does that make more sense? I mean, just for the concept?
anyway, assuming a 2 foot distance from the [strike]back[/strike] front wall and the second 38% line (btw, is this still the rule of thumb?
Yes, as far as axial modes. As I learned from b pape a while ago, that number may drop to low as 33% when you include non-axial modes. However, no one sits with their a head in a vice, and people like to recline to different extents at different times. Like the first part of my post, it's more for the concept, if anything, I think anyways.
I personally would not be surprised if 33-38% did not always sound best, because, you know, there are so many things going on, for instance the particular locations of speakers.
i did this in my current HT, and i'm not satisfied with the sound or location) i'd have a distance of about 124" ... i'm thinking of at least a 120"? is that a good idea?
Use this calculator to know your viewing angle:

Plugging the numbers you gave me, comes up with 40 degrees, which is 4 more than the THX rec of 36. 40 is big, and IMO, you should try it on a blank wall first to be sure for yourself. At the moment, both rmk and I are using even slightly bigger at 42 degrees. This makes 16:9 VERY big, but I think the nature of that compromise is so that 2.35 AR movies can be closer to the ideal immersion. IMO.
hope that helps!
