I thought ARC was a good thing....

Apparently I’m like the 10,000,000th person to have trouble with my LG (oled65c8) not sending audio over hdmi . I have a fairly straight forward setup with directv, ps4;fire stick and Sony x700 going into marantz 7012 (all hdmi) and hdmi arc from Avr to hdmi arc on TV.
All works well with the exception of any apps like Netflix and YouTube will not output sound to Avr. One answer is using an optical cable out to Avr which is not a terrible idea but my question is
1). Isn’t optical analog only in which case I would lose Dolby digital sound
2). Shouldn’t ARC work after spending $3700 on a display and AVR ( rhetoric question) lol

I’m probably gonna try doing a hard reset but if anyone has any alternate ideas I would be grateful
I should mention at hdmi control in on on avr
And smartlink is on on Tv
Thanks

Optical is digital and if tv supports it it can do 5.1 but not the more higher bitrate formats like dolby truHD master etc.
Is the tv audio input assigned as ARC in the reciever?

Actually the optical and ARC audio specs are identical. Audio of HDMI ARC does not support loss less codecs either.

As always the best solution is not to use he smart function of a TV. Out all sources upstream of the AVR or pre/pro.

Just use the on/off button only on a TV.

I was in too much of a rush, this is the best way.
The fire stick is probably equal or better the the tv at netflix/youtube. I dont know it personally but the appleTV i use sure beats the tv apps hands down.

I’m not sure what you mean by “out all sources upstream”. ( I hate sounding stupid lol)
I can’t definitely use the x700 or fire stick for Netflix. I was trying to use the tv app for convenience I guess,

ARC over the years I have been dealing with it works or it doesn't. Some devices play really nice together and some decide not to.
I would not worry about using Optical out of the TV. It's way more reliable and you do get 5.1. If your trying to stream anything higher I suggest an apple tv.

Should work for 5.1 over ARC if it is a newer tv.

I have Samsung and Yamaha though.

I wonder if the next generation of ARC will be any better....or even worse.

My biggest issues are with the video path, but I hear a lot of horror stories with audio. I see zero need for smart tvs, or people that are in the hobby to care for the feature. Always use an external STB streamer aside from apps, they give way more flexibility for home servers in regards to formats played.

What kind of receiver do you have?

ARC can be a pain to get working correctly which is why I only use it to stream audio from Netflix and Amazon Prime from my LG Smart OLED TV, and then only occasionally, but it works fine. LG is pretty good about regularly updating those two and supporting 4K, HDR, and Atmos. Everything else (cable, ShieldTV, 4K Blu-Ray) goes directly to my Denon receiver which in my case works better than connecting those directly to the TV and relying on ARC for audio. As long as your receiver supports 4K I'd use the receiver as your AV switch and only use ARC for streaming services.

I don’t know why people with AVRs use smart TVs anyway. It’s easy enough to get your streaming from Roku, et al.

Far easier to find a smart tv than not, isn't it? Personally don't need a tuner or audio in my tv but that's even harder to find (and much more expensive when I have seen such).

When I bought my TV, I was looking at a few vizios none of which had a tuner. They were all more expensive than Sony lg and Samsung. The sales guy said vizio was phasing out built in tuners. Not sure how true that is, but interesting. I looked at a few pro displays, those are real nice but come at a price.

Interesting about the Vizios....they still had the built in apps, tho? I can't even use a tuner, no OTA reception where I live.

I believe they still have apps. I use a fire box, faster than any smart TV I've played around with (the TV apps all seem to lag, take awhile to lauch) and that's not just my lg. I'd figure I'd get a better picture from an app on the smart tv, nope fire box wins all around.
