I think I got lucky!!

Over the past couple of month I've been looking into upgrading some of my stuff. I was initially looking at receivers (I have the Sony 510) and had decided on the Pioneer 1018. Was out checking prices locally, the usual places BB, Future shop, 2001 etc. At 2001 the sales person said the 1018 was a good receiver but had way more bells and whistles than what I needed, Ipod, XM radio etc. He recommended the Onkyo 606 as far better sound wise. Is this true? I just don't really know anything about Onkyo and until Audiohoics can't say I really ever heard of them. I'm a noob,eh! And the Onkyo was a bit cheaper. So didn't end up getting anything as I now have to research the Onkyo. So any advise is welcomed.
Here comes the lucky part. I was also looking at maybe upgrading a couple of my speakers, either the mains or the center. I finally figured out just what series PSB's I had. I bought them about 15-20 years ago, and all they have on the back is a number. Turns out they are the Century series, have a 100 center, 400 mains and 200 rears with a PA sub (best buy brand?). I've been more than happy with them so thought I would try to find a matching up-grade. On e-bay found some century 600 mains, was waiting for the seller to get back on shipping and before he did someone else bought them. Then found a century 200 center, was winning the bidding but fell asleep an hour before the auction end and lost out. Was pretty bummed out about this. So started looking in some local ads and found this for sale, and tell me what you all think, if this is a good deal or not. $1000 for a pair of PSB Image 5T's, PSB Image 2B's, PSB Image 8C center and an PSB Alpha Subsonic 1 sub, plus a Yamaha HTR-5950 receiver, speaker wire and banana plugs. It all looks to be in great shape. I'm going over tomorrow to look at them. But this all seems to be a really good deal and I usually don't get this lucky! How does it all sound?

Sounds like you're pretty excited about it. I would cut one of my monkey's paws off and mail it to you but I don't think we have time for all that. How about I just keep my fingers crossed instead? :)

I saw that you are from London and wanted to say that I lived in St. Thomas for 3 years as a kid in the 70's and hung out in London with friends on the weekends in th late 80's.

Alex, small world eh! We must be close in age, kid in the 70's, gettin in trouble in the 80's,lol.

Yep I'm pretty excited about this. I usually never seem to get any good deals so I hope this all works out. I was just looking for a speaker upgrade and the chance to get an all new speaker system, wow. I'm thinking even the receiver is better than the Sony but still planning on looking into the Onkyo.
Sent the guy selling the stuff three e-mails night before (1am to 4am), first just said I was just interested, last one said I had pretty much talked myself into it. All before he had even read them, lol.

I was born is St. Thomas.

Steve, Onkyo has been around a long time. I owned Onkyo equipment in the 80's. In fact, I chose an Onkyo cassette deck back then over a Nakamichi Dragon. Onkyo is one of the better brands, comparable to Denon and Yamaha. The 606 is a fine choice for receiver and the manufacturer's site says that it is 6 ohm continuous rated for the PSB's.

It' funny audio was just one of those things I just never really got into, unlike every other hobby I've had. When I got the PSB speakers I have now and a Dennon AVR 610 receiver I was more than happy with it so never looked into anything else. Trying to type this on the PS3 sucks

your hair was longer then, right?:D
No, it's still pretty long. :D

I could really run with this had you not posted an actual picture of a little girl.
Out of respect for her and the OP, I gotta let this one slide. ;)

Of course it is. Who else would turn their back to a pack of pachyderms?

Back to the topic of PSB's. Who's the member here that is always talking about PSB's? He's the person I would want to talk to if I were Steve. Here's a cnet review of that rec'r that told me that it doesn't have HDMI but it does have Dolby Digital.

Amazon has one for $200. I think if I were buying a rec'r I would make sure that it was current. Buying yesterday's technology just sucks cash out of what's needed for something current. I don't remember hearing anything about PSB's subs. So to me that whole deal is sort of contingent on what the speakers are worth up there. Based on this one thing I looked at, they are certainly worth considering.

Hey Steve,

You're gonna let us know how this turns out, right? I know you have better manners than that Waterloo crowd. ;) :)

Yep, sure will.
I won't be getting this until Wednesday, so will file a report on the weekend. I'm not going to attempt to type using the PS3 again, ever, lol.

Only getting the Yamaha receiver because he's selling it all as a package, I figure I can always sell it for a few bucks. I'm still hoping to come up with enough scratch to get the Onkyo receiver.

Dave, is there any A/V stores you would recommend in our area? Any Onkyo dealers you know of, the only one in London that seems to carry Onkyo is 2001 and they're asking $630 for the 606.

I've got an Onkyo dealer locally but he doesn't carry inventory. He's more into custom install. I can ask him for pricing on the 606 is you want me to.

It looks like Leon's furniture stores also carry Onkyo. Have you looked at Onkyo's Ontario dealer's page. There's another place in Woodstock.
