heh... fwiw. my personal preference would lean towards JBL or Genelec because of the elliptical tweeter waveguides used to ensure as smooth an off axis response as possible.

Every one has their preference - the choice is yours. I owned Event

well, guess what... I do NOT have the speakers yet. Little bit of a financial situation going on.

Anyways, I searched for those JBL's you posted earlier, and I read that they tend to struggle a bit at parts in music/movies where there's a lot of sound at the same time.

So then I looked at the Genelec 8030A one of you posted, and I read good things about those. Are they really worth 500 euro's a piece? And how do I connect them to my laptop? Do I need a receiver or external soundcard, or just one of these?: ( I don't know, little to no experience, I'v always used headphones)

I mean I'm willing to but I'm wondering if there's a better set somewhere else out there.

Speakers that don't struggle with complex passages are flat out expensive. I think the JBLs do well enough at the price point that it'd be splitting hairs.

that should do the trick most likely. Isn't there a return period you can take advantage of? It's easy to get zealous when shopping online but at some point you just have to accept that at a given price point there's 80% crap and the rest is pretty competitive. It's easy to get caught up in subjective opinions but it's best to hear it yourself with your own selection of source content, and then decide for yourself if you can live it. The genelecs will probably be a bit more clinical than the JBLs, but i suspect you'll be happy with either/or and so it's best to just pick the one which you feel would lead to less buyers remorse. You can always raise your budget in increments and go to a Vapour Cirrus or KEF 201/2 or Vapor Breeze or Salk HT1 or Salk SSM7 or JBL 6332 or Revel Gem or Genelec 8260 or Pioneer S2-EX or TAD Compact Reference or Seaton Catalyst and you'll just find that good --accurate-- speakers sound more similar than not and it's easy to pick a pair and be VERY happy with it, even though they still have tangible differences. Those tangible differences can be so easy for your ears to miss 90% of the time - if your speakers are good and accurate they should be inoffensive more than anything, and I don't think you'll find the JBLs OR the Genelecs offensive. Maybe someday you'll have a bigger budget to chase the next level - just don't be overzealous ;P

hm, you're probably right, I don't think my hearing is that good. And those speakers you mentioned are really expensive (or at least some of them, haven't checked them all) o.o

What are your thoughts!?!? (Take your time, listen to your favorite music. Play around with the bass -1 switch if it is overpowering the room. Same with the treble switch - it all depends on the room, just find the setting that sou ds least like speakers and most like music)

well first of all... I've been using the Sennheiser 380 Pro for a while and the bass in those go pretty low, and these don't go that far. So (as planned) I'll get a nice sub later. Too bad I have to wait for that

One thing I recommend doing is pulling them forward enough so that the reflection off of the desk is removed. Take a mirror and basically pull them forward until you can't see the speaker reflection through the mirror from your seat, while the mirror is on the desk surface. That reflection is too early to be desirable, and along the the vertical plane which is also undesirable.

They're at about ear level right now... I sit more often on the couch (behind camera) then on my chair when listening to music or watching movies.
Or are you saying that the main point is to get them off of the desk?

Anyways... the bass was overpowering the room, like you said, EV. Changed the switches on the back (if they have a name, I don't know what they're called). Better now.

I'm really happy with them. Time to start saving money for that sub ;D

A good flat speaker will generally have excess lower midrange / bass energy in a small room because the room is re-enforcing it heavily. If they optimize a speaker for a small room, it'll sound thin and lifeless in a large room. That's what's nice about a good active monitor as they're versatile.

Oh, ok. I understand. They're not completely pulled towards the edge though, just cuz I don't want them falling of my desk or anything. I'm always super careful with my stuff. Maybe too careful.
