Ok. Turn the crossover all the way up on the sub and place the sub volume at around 1/3 of max.

Set the mic (preferably on a tripod) at the seating position at ear level. Run the "auto-cal" and then go back and manually adjust the size (to small) and crossovers (start with 90hz) and see where you end up and let me know.

is it maybe because i have a 5.1

because the receiver is 7.1? sbl=side back left? sbr=side back right?

You do not want to send a full range signal to you speakers. You want the sub to handle all the low stuff. The auto-cal likely placed all your speakers in "full range". You need to go back and set the crossovers so the proper signals go to the proper place.

Edit. I forget that Onkyo doesnt use the words big and small anymore. Here is an explaination:
Onkyo has departed from prior models and no longer has the Large and Small settings; instead they use 'Full Band' to indicate Large (because after all Large means send the speakers the full frequency range) and for Small you set the xover frequency you want in one step instead of setting them to Small and then separately setting the xover frequency. This is because this model allows you to set the xover frequency separately for each channel as opposed to prior models that had the traditional global xover that applied to all channels.

It's fairly simple and the manual explains it all. If you want each channel set to Small (and you should) set the xover frequency for each channel. 80 Hz-90HZ is universally recommended

sbl and sbr are the back speakers of a 7.1 set-up.

Give me more info on the LPF and LFE. What are your options for these?

And yes, it is your stuff so you can turn up the sub but leave the sub crossover alone.

The scary thing is that I have never even seen an Onkyo!

I would guess that you want to set it to LFE and then set it around 80hz too. It should have an option like "both" which means you can have the LFE going to the sub and speakers (you dont want that so find a setting that is LFE/Sub only).

Ok guys with Onkyos. Help me out here!

Do you have the owners manual? If I knew what all the Onk does and how it labels everything it will be easy to figure out.

How does it sound after the changes?

A lot of people on here have Onks so keep looking back at your thread and you will get the answers.

People on here are a little "different" so try to answer all the questions asked and try to locate your CAPITAL key and puntuations on you keyboard or they may get turned off and not answer everything...lol...

I am just giving you a hard time:D

No problem on the help. AVR manuals never make sense but if you will leave it in your bathroom and read it each time you are in there and continue to play around with things, it will become easier to understand. I high fiber diet for the next 3 weeks will help you with this!

You wont break anything. Just turn it down really quickly if all the sudden something sounds different.

Now if you set it up to run FR (full range) vs. using crossovers you may catch a woofer in the chest at some point.
