I am trying to find some decent speakers. I have a room which is about 11x20 and im trying to outfit it with a suitable system. I was thinking about going with something inwall so i could place them at ear level while sitting and the speaker would not be in the way.

My question is about 'loud speakers' themselves. in a 7.1 system, with your centre, front left & front right handling most of the main dialog, should these speakers be more powerful, different then the rear 4?

are you suppose to put loud speakers in the rear?

is a 7.1 system too much for a approx. 200sq ft room?

As you can tell from my questions, both today and tomorrow I am new and inexperienced to this type of stuff... any suggestions or help would be greatly appriciated.

thanks,

DH

There really is no such thing as a "loud speaker". There are speakers that are more sensative and efficient in relation to the power they receive from the a/v receiver or amplifier and will sound louder than a less efficient speaker at the same volume setting.

Your a/v receiver is what controls the amount of power going to each speaker and you set this in the setup menu on the receiver. You can easily adjust the sound level from each speaker to fit your room acoustics and preferences. In most Dolby digital speaker setups for home theaters and movie soundtracks, the surround speakers are physically smaller than than anything in the "front 3"....because they normally carry far less audio information than the fronts.

If the "depth" of the room is the 20' dimension and your viewing/listening position is not on the rear wall, but several feet or more away from it, than a 7.1 setup may work well.

In-walls would certainly work for the surrounds and front 3, but unless you must use them up front, try normal speaker enclosures for the L-C-R.

Some in-wall units that have received good reviews and have an excellent price point are from "The Speaker Company"

or if budget is an issue, than http://www.thespeakercompany.com/IW-D5-LCR-3-Piece-In-Wall-Loudspeaker-System-P12C11.aspx plus two more pair of http://www.thespeakercompany.com/IW-D5-Pair-In-Wall-Speakers-P11C11.aspx
add a subwoofer and you are done http://www.thespeakercompany.com/T250-Subwoofer-P103C17.aspx

or, if stand alone speakers are OK, then the prices on Energy "C" series speakers are hard to beat now http://www.wwstereo.com/#/ecommerce/store/Speakers/33/144559// and add 2 more C-50's for surrounds and pick a subwoofer to go with them.

Speakers are not "powerful". Some are more efficient than others. Meaning they need less power for a given output level (volume). Speakers have power handling capacity. Some can handle more power (Watts) than others.
