Hi, josephga. Welcome to the forum!

You've got a very common question, so the regulars here will certainly be used to my answer. :) There are a number of good receivers in the $400 (or less) price range. My personal favorites are the Onkyo 505 (~$250) and the Onkyo 605 (~$400). I'm a fan of Onkyo, and I think that they've got two solid units in the 505 and 605.

I'll second Adams recommendation on the 605.

Do you need HDMI? If not I would go ahead and get the Yamaha RX-V659 or Big Box store equiv. HTR-5960. If you do need HDMI you might consider the Yamaha RX-V661/HTR-6060.

The Onkyo's are also a good choice, and if you never plan on upgrading your speakers you could easily go either way.:)

I don't know much about that Denon, but they make good stuff.

How much would the Onkyo 504 cost you? One of the upgrades in the 505 that I like is the Audyssey 2EQ auto set-up. The 505 is around $250 when it's not on sale.

I'm really happy with it. It's a little underpowered at times, so I got an external amp for my front two speakers. However, for 95+% of my listening, it's just great.

I like the looks of mine better than the newer models (1016 and 1017), but they have more features.

what i find confusing is. i was looking at specs on some receivers. onkyo, pioneer, and denon claim High current amplifier . where sony, jvc, Yamaha and a few others dont have that claim

Don't worry about the term "high-current." This is just marketing. Also don't get tied up on watts per channel either as specs are very skewed. Yamaha, Onkyo, Harman/Kardon, and Denon all have comparable products in this price range. It really comes down to price and features.
