Hello to all!! And thank you in advance for any sort of input I may get...

I have an issue... I recently purchased 3 major components:

Samsung 46in 1080 HDTV
Samsung home theater system
Samsung Blu-Ray Disc player

Problems I am running into:

One one HDMI output on both the receiver and Blu player
TV has 2 HDMI

I bought an optical digital audio cable to make it work along the HDMi, however, I am only hearing two front channels of my 5.1 surround system... my wireless rear speakers are not working, neither is my middle speaker.

When I have gone to retail audio stores they tell me that it is not possible to get 5.1 with my system.

Are they right?

all of my samsung components have anynet thru HDMi.... i don't know what to do, I have spent all this money to come and find out that I am not able to fully enjoy my surround sound.

Here is how i have it set it up currently:

Receiver to TV via HDMi
Blu RAy to TV via HDMi
Optican Audio cable from Receiver to Blu Ray, and also tried Audio Cable from TV to blu ray...

Can I split the HDMi

Am I doing something wrong? Please help me.... i will love to get the full experience...

Welcome to the forum!

If someone doesn't get you set up before tomorrow morning, I'll be happy to walk through all of this with you. My eyes are just very tired at the moment, so I need to take a break. :)

In order for us to really help you out, we'll need to know the model numbers for your TV, home theater system, and Blu-ray player. Thanks!

You can't send 5.1 over optical when you're outputting HDMI. The only thing that should plug into your TV is the HDMI from your receiver. Everything else plugs into the receiver via HDMI. HDCP won't let you do it any other way and it's the only way you'll get the high def audio to your speakers.

Here are the models

TV= Samsung LN46A500
Home Theater= Samsung HT-TZ515
Blu-Ray Player= Samsung BD-P1500

Can a splitter be used?

TechGal,

I see no reason you would need a splitter.

Your Samsung HT-TZ515 does not have any HDMI inputs only HDMI output so your connection scheme below is correct:

Receiver HDMI out to TV
Blu-Ray HDMI out to TV
Blu-Ray optical out to Receiver

You will need to setup the audio in the Blu-ray player to ouput either PCM or Bitstream to the Receiver.

The reason you are only getting 2 channels could be as simple as your player is defaulting to the 2.0 track and you need to go into the audio settings and pick on of the other fomats (ie Dolby Digital or DTS). You will not be able to get any of the new high res audio formats (TrueHD or DTS Master Audio) because those can only be transmitted via HDMI and your receive does not have an HDMI input.

Even if you are only getting 2-channel over the optical you can engage Dolby Prologic II mode and it will matrix the output to all 5 of your speakers.

Let us know what the audio settings are on your Blu-Ray player and we can go from there.

That's hard to do when the receiver has no HDMI inputs:p
I'm dling your manual will be a sec.

Okay, I've looked through your owner's manuals. I think that you are close to having what you want, but you need to make a couple of changes. The primary issue is along the lines of what edmcanuck mentioned in that, with your TV, the audio coming from the blu-ray player over HDMI is downmixed to two channels when it goes out the optical audio on the TV. From the owner's manual on page 11:

When the receiver (home theater) is set to On, you can hear sound output from the TV’s Optical jack. When the TV is displaying a DTV(air) signal, the TV will send out 5.1 channel sound to the Home theater receiver. When the source is a digital component such as a DVD and is connected to the TV via HDMI, only 2 channel sound will be heard from the Home Theater receiver. If you want to hear 5.1 channel audio, connect the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL) jack on the DVD player or Cable/Satellite Box directly to an Amplifier or Home Theater, not the TV.

Below is the way that I would connect the equipment to the TV, which is exactly what you've already done:
  • Connect the blu-ray player to the TV using an HDMI cable.
  • Connect the home theater system to the TV using an HDMI cable.

I'll give the splitter concept some thought, but for now, let's work with what you have. If you want to get 5.1 from blu-rays and are okay with getting only stereo or Dolby Pro-Logic from your TV broadcasts, then connect things like you had it:
  • Connect the optical audio output from the blu-ray to the optical audio input on the home theater system.
  • Connect the analog audio output on the TV to the AUX analog audio inputs on the home theater system.

If you would rather get 5.1 from TV broadcasts, and are okay with stereo or Dolby Pro-Logic from blu-rays, then connect things like this:
  • Connect the optical audio output on the TV to the optical audio input on the home theater system.
  • Do not connect the blu-ray player to the home theater system.

Be sure that you select a surround sound mode on your home theater system that will give you surround sound (such as Dolby Digital or Dolby Pro-Logic).

EDIT: Craig beat me to it this morning. Excellent! He's got some great advice on making sure that you have the settings correct on your system.

Your connections are correct and you shouldn't need any splitters. Dolby Pro Logic 2 will make 5.1 sound even with 2 channels of source material.

FYI you do have an EQ thing so that should set it up for you automatically.

By setting the ASC function just once when you relocate or install the unit, you can have the unit
automatically recognize the distance between speakers, levels between channels, and frequency
characteristics to create a 5.1-channel sound field optimized for your environment.

EQ SETUP
Plug the ASC microphone into the ASC input jack.
Place the ASC microphone at the listening position.
Press ASC button.
To create the optimal 5.1 channel sound fi eld, the
selections are in the following sequence:
L ➞ C ➞ r ➞ Sr ➞ SL ➞ SW
When the message "REMOVE MIC" appears in the display,
unplug the ASC microphone.

The picture on the manual is misleading and if you happen to have a tripod I suggest putting the mic on it at ear level in middle of your sofa.(this manual is terrible.)
(eq can be very annoying so be aware.)

First play a cd and press that button. If you hear sound from everything. Then scream for joy!:D
If it doesn't work continue
make sure all the speakers are hooked securely. Obvious, but hey I've done it before

In Stop mode, press the MENU button.(i'm guessing this means when you stop a cd or dvd(very poor wording IMO) It could also be a setup menu somewhere.)

Press the Cursor % button to move to Audio and then press the
ENTER button.
In the SPEAKER SETUP, press the ENTER button again.
Press the Cursor ,,, button to move to the desired speaker
and then press the ENTER button.
For C, SL, and SR, each time the button is pressed, the mode switches
alternately as follows : SMALL ➞ NONE.
For L and R, the mode is set to SMALL.
SMALL : Select this when using the speakers.
NONE : Select this when no speaker is connected.
d Press the RETURN button to return to the previous level.

The rear speaker portion is wireless(they should be shot for calling them rears) and has very poor instructions. Side Surrounds are best placed on the sides actually and not behind you. If the surround speaker wireless module has a plug and it should then plug it in. Then you will want to run the speaker wire from those spring clips to the speakers spring clips match colors or it will sound terrible. There may be some type of button you press or it may just come on automatically if it receives a matching signal from the receiver.

Sorry for your difficulties. I will caution others against this brand since there manuals are not very good IMO.

I hope that helps.

direct from your manual which you should have tried to read(i'm sure you did seems pretty LQ for a manual IMO)

Manual at http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/detail/support.do?group=audiovideo&type=hometheatre&subtype=hometheatresystems&model_cd=HT-TZ515T/XAC&mode=C

Sound can be heard only from a
few speakers and not all six.(should say 2 speakers.)
• When listening to a CD or radio, sound is output to the front
speakers (L/R) only. Select "PRO LOGIC II" by pressing
PL II (Dolby Pro Logic II) on the remote control to use all
six speakers.
• Make sure that the DVD disc is 5.1-CH compatible.
• If you set C, SL, and SR to NONE in the speaker mode in the
audio setup of the setup screen, no sound is heard from the
center speaker and the front

IOW try a DVD movie. or select pro logic II on the remote for a cd.

Please review this wherever you bought it and mention the very poor manual. I am just beside myself atm.

Thankfully you came to us for help. I only wish you had come sooner before you bought a system. Maybe we could have gotten you one with a better manual.

Welcome to the forum let us know if you need any help and next time if you or a friend wants to buy a system like this I suggest you drop by and seek our advice. We are always eager to help people get the best sound possible.

Out of curiosity, lsiberian, what part(s) of the manual for the HT-TZ515 did you find so bad that you're going to caution people against Samsung? I thought it was fine, but I just skimmed for what I wanted.

FWIW, I would select PCM in the Blu-Ray player's setup menu and PLIIx on the HT system. It looks like you have it hooked up properly as long as all the connections are tight and secure.

Wow thank you all for the response... I got my system working and changed the sound settings to matrix on my receiver.... and Kaboom, I hear my system the way that is supposed to be...

I did

HDMI from Receiver to TV
HDMI from Blu-Ray to TV
Optical Cable from Receiver to Blu-Ray
Audio Cables (Red & White) from receiver to TV Aux 2 (Put Receiver in Aux 2 to get surround sound)
Changed the sound settings in the receiver to Matrix Mode and fucntion to D-In (Digital In) and I am good to go....

Happy Happy

I'm glad everything worked out. I also hope you catch the home theater bug and decide to make incremental improvements in image and sound quality. Your kids really deserve a radical subwoofer, don't they? It'll stop them from hanging out at the local cineplex.

Combination of it being the morning and some of the misinformation in my mind. I know they want to simplify stuff, but I think they were missing somethings.:D
