I need help setting up my receiver

I recently bought a Toshiba SD-4980 DVD player and hooked it up with an optical cable to my JVC RX-6042S. My Xbox is hooked up with an optical cable as well. Now, I fiddled with the settings to get the DVD player audio to work on the "DVD" source...but when I go to the "TV Sound", my Xbox audio doesn't work. My digital in setting looks like "1 DVD 2CD 3TV". I got the DVD player connected to "Digital 2(CD)" and my Xbox to "Digital 3(TV)". What am I doing wrong?!

Also, when I click the "Input Digital" on the front to select Dolby Digital and DTS, there is no sound even though my DVD player and Xbox (except for DTS) support it. That might be a dumb question but I really don't understand it. Thanks!

Kyle,

On my receiver, I can select analog or digital as the input source for certain components, TV being one of them. Perhaps you need to select "TV" and then also select either "digital" or "auto" (meaning it will pick whichever it can) on another selection button. Sorry, I don't have time to read your manual at the moment, but I'll do it later if that doesn't work for you.

In regards to getting DD and DTS to play through the DVD player, some DVD players require you to go into their setup menu and select bitstream (instead of PCM) as the output for DD and/or DTS. If you don't do this, then you'll get stereo sound instead of DD or DTS. My first Toshiba DVD player was that way, and my current Panasonic DVD player had to be set up to output DTS. Might want to give that a try.

Good luck, and let us know if that doesn't work for you. Thanks.

Thanks alot Adam. I changed the settings on my DVD player to Bitstream and I get Dolby Digital:). As for the Xbox, I was wrong...it does play in DD. I never noticed that it flip flops from stereo to DD depending on what's going on (ex: listening to music then playing a game). Also, I got both the DVD player and Xbox audio to work just fine when switching between them. I don't even know exactly what I did but it works:) Ahh, I can't get enough of that crisp, clear Dolby Digital:D

Fantastic! I'm glad that you got it all working. Nothing quite like that moment after you get all set up right and finally get to enjoy everything.
