I see. That's probably due to the audio output on the TV not being controlled by the volume on the TV, but it also might be something that could be set in the TV's menu system. If you haven't checked that already and have questions about it, just let us know what model of TV that you have so that we can look it up.
Thanks, I have this TV:

Ok, fine. So, what do you want to do next?
Or, is Adam has a solution for you? Oh Adam!, where are you? ;)

Oops. I downloaded the manual days ago and never got back to this.

Thanks, Bob! I needed the reminder.

EDIT: Then again, the OP hasn't been back for three days. Maybe 'cause I never responded. Darn it. I'll check it out.

Adam is travelling at the speed of light!

^ That was super quick! Are you on something? :)

I think that the OP is looking for a cheap alternative for audio going from his TV to a receiver, or someting like that anyway. You also know more than me on this.

Alrighty, from what I can tell, that TV has fixed audio outputs - meaning that the audio outputs aren't controlled by the volume setting on the TV itself.

On your budget reccomendations

Check out the speaker company or bid on ebay at the harman kardon store on beta 20s.

Pick up a Dayton sub and a used receiver. And you can have a really nice system.

Just bought a Samsung 5.1 system for cheap.

It sucks that I can't control the sound with the TV remote. I'm trying to mess with it some more in case I missed something.

I found this on another website. Is this related to my problem?

I have the LN40A550 40" LCD HDTV, which I currently have configured with the built in speakers turned off. I am using the analog RCA outputs of the LN40A550 to feed an input on my Yamaha stereo receiver. When I press the mute or volume buttons on the remote for the LN40A550, a "Not Available" warning graphic comes up on the screen.

Is it possible to configure the mute and/or volume functions on the remote to control the RCA audio outputs? I have tried a number of different configurations on the LN40A550's audio settings and I can't find a way to accomplish this. Help! I want to be able to mute the obnoxiously loud commercials without using a separate remote!
and here's the tech's reply:

vampidemic,

The internal mute is for the television speakers only. The RCA feed is live - always - and is not controlled by the volume. The best way to mute, in your case the commercials, is by muting the amp/receiver that is controling the sound.

The mode not supported is showing up because you've already muted the internal speakers, and you can't mute the volume AND the internal speakers at the same time. The television sees that command as redundant and displays the message for that reason.
