I need a GREAT 2 channel power amp! What is great? Or two monoblocks...?

That breaks the previous definition of an active speaker. You guys need to make up your minds. ;)
A sub that is not a "powered sub" is just a "sub" and you would need either an "active XO" or a "passive XO" that would be separate from the sub.

That was the point, Gordon, the Denon has an active crossover.

Subs are not active in this case. Saying that a sub is active would infer that the sub had a XO on board...
Every single critic I've seen talk about the Orion say that it is an active speaker, although the XO is NOT on board. The Orion has no internal XO, just like my non-powered Funk Audio 18.0 subs. Both the XO & amps are completely outboard. Yet, it is considered by critics as "active".

So by ONE definition that an active system has the XO before the amp, the non-powered sub is an active sub, just not internally powered. Thus, it is an active non-powered sub.

Hey, GranteedEV & I are on the same page already. Gordon needs to catch up here.

"Active" means the XO comes before the amp. That is all it means.

"Powered" means the speaker/ sub has a built-in amp. That is all it means.

Exactly, Gordon. Come on, man. The Denon AVR has the active crossover.

So the active XO comes before the amp of the subwoofer. Thus, the sub is active whether it is internally or externally powered.

Ok, ok, ok, I was thinking to literal.

An active sub has an active crossover before the amp channel driving the sub therefore defined as an active sub. I got it. I will try not to confuse this point in the future.

But please smack me if I blur the lines in the future...

Can I come back in the tree house now?
