I want to make sure I understand all of this. An I-Link connection provides a 8-channel digital input. If you DVD-A/SACD player and preamp or receiver have these, then your preamp/receiver can handle all of the processing of the audio. If you only have 8-channel analog connections, then the preamp can't process the audio and you have to rely on the DVD-A/SACD player's processing. Is this correct???

If so, and you have a really good DVD-A/SACD player (Denon), then is it a big deal if your preamp doesn't have an I-Link connection. I've been considering B&K, Sunfire, and Adcom and I don't think any of these have an I-Link connection. Plus, don't the Denon players have their own version of this with their own connection forcing you to use a Denon receiver?

Thanks in advance for any clarification on this!

i link !

i will point it again so you will know exatly what i ment.

the yamaha dsp az-9 have the input of an i link to produce the best digital streight from any source like dvd etc.
on the other hand i have the very new product from denon, the dvd a-11 a superb dvd by any mean.the problem is that some how they dont speak together (the yamaha and the denon) when i use the i link cabale coming on the denon package with the dvd. sure i want to use the i link when i hear dvd-a or sacd, but i cant even though when i plug the i link cable the yamaha recognize the dvd as he show on the display window-"denon dvd a-11".
i wonder if there is a way to conect them with i link cabale or maybe this is an "ugly" way from denon company to force you to buy also their av amplifires.for fact i know that the pioneer dvd multi player like the 868i do work via i link together with the yamaha i link campatible recievers.
help me to decide if i will send back my denon a-11 to the company, cause i sure dont give up on my superb yamy.the best monster i have ever had.

shlomore,

In regards to you first sentence, I wasn't replying or answering anything. This was a question for myself. I'm guessing you had posted a similar question on here.

From what I understood, the Denon actually uses a different plug (RG-45) instead of a firewire type plug. So I didn't think there was any way to hook a yamaha with I-Link up to a Denon DVD player (8 channel digital hookup of course).

It is a little bit more complicated. The A11 has an i-link but untill recently not activated. Denon USA and Denon Germany are now upgrading the A11 hardware and software to activate the i-link. I read onm a german discussionlist that it worked perfectly after the upgrade(in Germany(ofcourse) for free if you have a pio av10 or the big yammie. I'm waiting in the Netherlands for a message from the distributor to send my a11 in for upgrading(i own the big yammie)

one more question in my head,,do the i link conection work also transfer dts or dolbi digital formats of dvd video?or is it only know how to transfer the audioble info from music sacd and dvd audio? does it work also on two chanel stereo from regular cds?

SACD is not possible yet, Sony has to give Denon approval of using the i-link for SACD. I do have the A11 and DSP Z9, so I'm as eager as you for the upgrading. The German chap wrote that the a11 and the big pion worked perfectly. Asap I have any more info I'll get back to this.

Shlomore & anyone interested. If you can get your hands on a Pioneer DV-S969 AVI player it will connect directly to the Yamaha DSP-Z9 by firewire or I-Link or whatever other names this puppy has. Apple call it IEEE-1394. Be sure the Pioneer has S in the number. Pretty new unit. Good Hunting.

The Denon DVD-5900 I am testing the RX-Z9 with does pass DVD-A and SACD via i.link. However, older models need to be modded by Denon to enable the i.Link feature. I will find out what serial#'s are affected for this.

a11-dsp az9 i link

good morning joris,

did you ever thought of changing one of the products you own?(a-11 or az-9)
i dont want to think that i would have to give up on one of those great monsters,,but i realy want that the a-11 will send via a link clear digital audio to the dsp az-9,just as it does with the digital send thru video thru the dvi-d.
i wonder if any one here expirience the difrent between i link and analog cables.do you realy hear the difrent with i link? one more question i want to ask this great forum,i link cable transfer also dts, ddigital from movies?i mean does i link move all the audio info thru this cable?or just multi chanel music dvd such as dvd a or sacd? one thing to rickw who generasly offered to see the new pioneer,i just want to tell you rick that i had the 757ai pioneer before the a-11,,believe me the denon is a much uper leage, even in analog the sound is so much better then i use to hear from the pioneer..i simply love the pefrormance of the a-11..the picture thru dvi is something you never saw before, and my plasma is 1025-1025 pixel, which make it very sharp and real...

Speaking of "Heavy Monsters" have you checked out the Pioneer Elite DV-59AVI ? I quote from the companies American website:

i-LINK Connectivity. i-LINK connectivity, a.k.a. IEEE1394, is an advanced digital interface that, with one digital cable, can simplify your system and expand its performance at the same time. It’s perfect for handling high-resolution formats like DVD-Audio and SACD.

Now in case Sony/Philips hasn't licensed Pioneer to output DSD raw digital data by firewire (to our beloved DSP-Z9) you have a pretty good lawsuit.

Happy Hunting!!!!

i.Link between Sony SCD-XA9000ES and Yamaha RX-Z9

Does anyone have any experience with connecting a Sony SCD-XA9000ES to a Yamaha RX-Z9 via i.Link? I've been trying to find out if this will work before spending money for the Sony SACD player.
