I have to make a choice....

This is a hard decision to make. Now that I have my TX-SR805, which receiver do I sell? The Sony STR-DB840 or the Pioneer SX-2600?

I've had my Pioneer since I bought it brand new in 1990 when I was 17. It was my first "real" stereo, so there's a lot of sentiment attached to it. It's in excellent cosmetic condition, but the buttons don't work like they use to (they "stick" a lot), the graphic eq led's are faded away, the headphone jack isn't well grounded anymore, and the right channel speaker terminal fades in and out. So should I fix it and keep it? Or sell it and replace it with the Sony?

Tough choice....

Don't sell, use the Sony, refurb the Pio

Myraid,
Congrats on your new gear, I hope you enjoy it as much as you have the Pio.

The Pio will have little to no monetary value, in part due to it's age and in part to the working condition--you value it way more than you could possibly get selling it.

FWIW: I have an integrated amp with similar sentimental ties from my college days (well prior to 1990 :):) ) and am glad I kept it even though it is very limited in terms of today's capabilities.

Therefore, I suggest you use the newer and properly working Sony in your BR system, while begining to restore your long-held Pio. Ending up with a "classic" Pio in good working order for an office/den/garage. As a bonus, it should be quite a fun project as well.

Hey myriad1973,

This has to be the best post of the day. :)

If I was you, I'll get rid of them both. But if you want to depart from only one, get rid of that Sony, it's history now, you've got to face the future man.
Sony is almost an extinct species as far as receivers are concern, and other stuff too.
I still have my Pioneer VSX-9300s, and I keep it too for sentimental reason.
Just fix yours, it only need some knob lube, pull the knob and apply spray lube specially for that, from Radio Shack. Open the top cover and clean around the speaker posts, and clean that headphone jack too >> brand new, voila!

Easy choice. :)

Cheers,
Bob

P.S. I know that my opinion differs from the above poster, but that's just me.
After all, I'm like you, very sentimental towards my Pioneer. I don't care about money, I care about my heart & soul.

+1. If your electronics skills are not up to the task, rather, take it to a repair shop and have them fix it up.

Alternately, if the amp section is good, you can just use it as a third zone amp... garage or deck?

I'm still debating.... I might end up using the Sony for my BR, and the Pioneer for something else. Not sure yet. I live in an apartment, so I don't know what other room I could put it in.

The pointers on cleaning, I'm not so sure that would work. I tried opening up the Pioneer and gave it a good cleaning a few years ago, but I think the parts are worn out. The headphone jack is loose for instance, and it consists mostly of buttons, most of which tend to "double-click" like a mouse. Especially the tuner presets.

The bathroom. :D

Ok, seems you're not an audio handy man. If you know a friend who is...
Or give the Pioneer to your brother or sister (after your friend fixed it); so it stays in the family, and your sentimentality for it, remains preserved. :)
And just use your Sony, like you said, in your bedroom.

~ Now, is that a good plan, or not? ...... Except for the bathroom. ;)

Cheers,
Bob
