My dvd player has DVD Audio capability and my receiver has a 5.1 input assignable to the DVD player. My question has two parts and here they are: 1. If I connect my DVD player using the described method above, is that the correct way to get DVD audio, or should my receiver have a fixed dvd audio in?

2. Can I/should I watch movies in this mode, because when I assign this 5.1 input to the DVD my digital coax connection is turned off. I only wonder because my receiver is 6.1 without this connection.

I know you guys say no question is stupid, and I also know I'm testing the limits of that saying. Thanks alot for any help.

Question 1) Yes that is correct you will use the 5.1 analog inputs for DVD Audio.

Question 2) Depending on the receiver you might be able to assign the digital coax to a different input (ie. video 2) and it should work. you would then have video 1 for the DVD-A and video 2 for movie watching.

Thanks allot John A. Your answer is a big help. I am pretty new to all of this, and electronics have a way of taking a dirt nap when I'm around, which is why I like to ask questions first. It turns out that I can use my remote to switch between digital coax and multi channel inputs while I have DVD selected as the source. Do you think this is the way to go or should I permanently assign a new input to the DVD with the coax?

Vancouver, sorry my question wasn't worded very well. Basically I was concerned about running the DVD audio out from my DVD player into the multi channel input on my receiver. The manuals for both my receiver and my DVD player are vague as to what proper procedure should be. Probably because they figured it was so obvious that no one could possibly screw it up. (obviously they haven't met me) I have a Sony STR DE-1075, and a Panasonic 5 disc changer and I have a Monster digital coax connecting them. I run 12 g Monster wire to all my speakers. (hadn't gotten around to the section of the site where such things were reviewed so I bought based on salesperson's recommendation) For speakers I have 4 JBL N24IIs and a NII series center. I also Have 2 8" JBL subs. I know that this won't knock anyone’s socks off, but this system only has to fill a 9' by 10' room with 6' ceilings. I also have several good quality RCA cables that I was planning to use to use for the DVD audio. I guess my ultimate goal is just to get the best sound I can from what I have. I do plan to purchase a new system when I move into my new house in a year or so, either RBH or Axiom based on reviews from this site, at which point the current system will be relegated to the bedroom.

Thanks again guys for bothering to answer me, this site is great, and I am learning a lot reading the FAQ section as well as the other newbie questions. It is really nice to see that those of you in the know answer the questions posed, no matter how common sense the answers should be.
