I found the best subwoofer placement... for my room!

When I got new speakers I placed the sub, a Speaker Company T250, in the front corner (pos. 1) next to the main speakers and just assumed it was the best position. However I never thought the sub had the impact it should, but let it go for about 6 months. I starting reading about sub placement techniques on this forum and downloaded and burned the bink audio test cd.

Here's a layout of my room 24x14:
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right"></a></td></tr></table>

With the sub in Pos. 1 I listened to the 16Hz through 60Hz tracks and walked around my room. I was shocked/dumb founded, the most output could be felt/heard by my front door with the sub in (pos. 1). I never felt bass like this before from the sub while sitting on the sofa. I knew immediately pos. 1 was bad. I still don't get how that was possible. In (pos. 1) the sub was facing the sofa, however the bass ended up in the other corner. Weird!

With the recently acquired 25ft of monoprice rca cable and reading a bunch on subwoofer placement, I moved the sub onto the sofa in my main listening position and played the same test tones and crawled around the living room. Low and behold almost nothing in (pos. 1), however behind the sofa in the corner I found powerful bass.

So i moved the sub into (pos. 2) behind the sofa and whamo, all of a sudden I had deep powerful bass while sitting on my sofa. I just want to say, if you haven't done this type of "test", it is well worth the time and energy. The difference for me is completely night and day. Now I need to run the cable under the floor and rerun audyssey.

Excellent post!

The chances of just plunking a subwoofer down any old place and getting the best sounding results are about the same as winning the lottery.

In my case, I had to fire the sub's driver right into one corner of my room. If course this meant the amp and wires were unattractively facing into the room, but the sonic results were worth it.

If you've got a sub, take diegs' advice and do some experimentation.

i took my first retail sub, dayton sub120. that i had replaced with the DIY 12's.
and put it right up against the back of my chair =

if you guys have the room behind/next to your seat = YOU MUST at least try it.
