I finally purchaced an AVR!!

Yes, it is true. I just went out to circuit city today and purchaced the ONKYO TX- SR504 today. I usally spend hrs upon hrs doing research before I make a purchace, but I guess I was just tired and picked this one since it was on sale for 290.00 USD. After tax it was over 300.00. Do you think this is a good buy? As most of you know already. I am certain that I will be purchacing the BIC Acoustech speakers for 799.99 very very soon. And I still have 30 days left before my return policy ends for my AVR.

man, im really not sure what to do. i just compared and read a few reviews for the pioneer VSX-816-K

and it really looks better than the onkyo, it is also the same price too...

The Pioneer definitely offers more in the features department, and Cnet rates the Pioneer very highly. I will do some more research and give you my findings.

If you must by locally then it's probably fine. I just bought the Yamaha HTR-5960 (compare to the audioholics review for the RX-V659) from an authorized internet dealer for 330 shipped. The yammie has pretty good reviews from audioreview, avsforums, and here at audioholics. Just my two cents.

In response to you last question "NO". The 816 is a good receiver but so is the 504. They are comparable feature/price wise, you wouldn't be gaining anything. I've got a budget Onkyo on one system and a budget Pioneer on the other and I prefer the Onkyo but that's just me. Objectivly they are compairable.

Consider this, the Pioneer has auto set up, and it has preouts on all channels. The auto set up makes things incredibly simple, and preouts allow you to upgrade to a better amplifier in the future without replacing the entire receiver. If it were me I would go with the Pioneer, because I have a seperate amp, both will have nearly the same power so the difference audible won't be much.

Well, my rooom is basically a rectagnle, and with just a narror walkway leading out of it. It is the perfect home theater room in my opinion....... but the auto setup does look appealing.

I have had this model for about two months and am very pleased, the sound is clean and the set-up is simple. Only thing missing on the Pioneer is the up-conversion from composite to s-video. But I don't need that feature anymore.

One more word on the Auto Sound Set-Up, It is not persice but very close to it (beter then by ear) It is preferable to use an SPL meter (C-weighing, Fast Response) for greater accuracy.
