I emailed Emotiva about their Ultra Sub12

I'm in Canada too and another option is SVS, which ships to Canadian addresses out of Toronto. No brokerage, no duty, and much cheaper shipping. www.sonicboomaudio.com is the website for this, and the PB10-NSD is ported to provide more bottom end.

I ended up going the US route as I live 10 min from the US border and can have stuff shipped to the border and then bring it across myself.

These are some of the finish options I am looking at with the 10.1.

3db, is your preference a sealed design?
I have no preference whether sealed or ported? My old PSB Subsonic5 is a dual port design and I've never heard it chuff or hear any other kind of port noise. Its a good little sub but I want to reach into the low 20s now which it simply cannot do. Which leads to another question, am I mising that much because I'm already 10db down at 27 Hz?

Frequency Range
On Axis @ 0° ±3dB 30-150Hz
Lf Cutoff -10dB 27Hz

I have sent them an email to see how much cheaper I could get the subs if I drove down to Toronto to pick it up? At first glnace, their prices are not that great. The PB10-NSD is lissted at $499 US and the Canadiian dealer is advertising for $579.00. I guess dealers who import pay duty as well but is the duty that much?

3db I owned the pb10 and have since sold it.Fwiw the sdx10 should be every bit as good as the pb10 nsd driver if you go with a ported box as mentioned before. I recall reading about American made products...duty shouldn't apply...so is it a mark..I dunno...:). As for you driving from Ottawa to Markham to save on the shipping charges...your fuel consumption would likely cost the same...although you could stop by my place and say hello....:D

IMO...buy Canadian goods made by/and or produced by a Canadian owned company....:)

If you are looking to improve output in the 20ish to 30hz range definitely go with a ported design. Keep in mind at these budget price points, these subs will be limited to smallish rooms.

My HT area is in a U shaped room for a lack of a better description with theon one leg of teh U being much longer than the other. The HT is setup in the longest leg leg of the U measuring 10' x 12' , the couch about one foot out into the open area (connecting both legs) which goes back an additional 10' and is 23' wide. My current sub is located directly behind the sofa (best location from having done the bass crawl technique) . The drop tile ceiling is at best 7' high.

The other leg of the U goes towards the stairs.

I'm not sure if you would consider this a large or a small room as I'm only using the small part of a room but its open to the bigger part of the room. I hope the room description makes sense.

Interesting. I wished they published their frequency response.
It uses a CSS SDX10. And you can get a custom finish. You can probably contact Funky Waves and determine if a sealed or ported version would be prefered for your room... no restriction to what's on the site. I highly recommend that sub. He may be able to tune the port with a bit more respect to your room than the standard tuning, as well.

FW can tell you exactly what driver they would use, which might give reassurance, but I doubt they are using the best at that price.
CSS has two lines of drivers, Trio and SDX. If I ever made a 10" sub, the SDX10, the peerless, acoustic elegance, TC Sounds, JL, Seas, upcoming exodus 10", and Soundsplinter would all be up there on my list for 10" drivers to use, in terms of RAW performance. And dollar-to-performance, I think only the peerless would compare from what i've modeled in the past... the rest are all only somewhat better but cost 2-4 times as much!

Likewise, dollar for dollar their trio 12 is tough to beat, although dollar-to-performance you do get a much more notable upgrade if you spend more because that's a budget 12". However if 3db doesn't mind the added size of a 12" driver and box, he should also contact FW about the Trio 12, as its price is roughly the same as the SDX10. It doesn't have the excursion of higher end 12" drivers but the overall driver design is very nice. Again, only the peerless is one I would compare it to at its cost point.

After pouring through all this data, I've made up my mind to save some more until I can get what I'm after, a sub that will play 20Hz with authority. It looks liek a sub like that will cost me around the $700 dollar price mark as a minimum, maybe even more unless there is an aboslutley screaming deal tha comes in my way. I rather save up and only spend one more time then do it over again later on.

but what about two subs!?
My Yamaha only is 7.1 out...(Yeah I'm using that as an excuse not too purchase another sub :) ) . However, two subs that will give me solid 20 Hz extension will still cost me around $1000. for the pair. I was hoping that Emotiva for $535 delivered to my front door was the ticket but it wasn't. Oh, well, scrimp save, start eating kleenex, anythiing, :p to build my savings account up to get a good sub. :)

If that is what it takes...I held on to my twoonies and set them aside..it didn't take to long, of course, I did sell my pb10 which helped fund my new sub...;):D
