I am seriously thinking about getting the Funky Waves 10.1 sometime this year for a small room. Pricing starts at $500. After viewing the sample finishes, for $650 shipped to my door I could the FW 10.1 with a chocolate or charcoal stained cherry veneer (just a few of the samples to choose from) with satin clear finish. This also includes the bar style grille.

I'd guess the 10.1 would start to roll-off much later and give more output for movies than the sub-12 as it is ported vs sealed....just a guess

Wow

A response from Funky already.

We can build a very similar product, a sealed good quality 12" driver with a 300 watt amplifier in a 15" cube, the price with shipping and tax would be $575
While this will reach 20hz, no sealed 12" subwoofer will have a lot of output at 20hz, if your room is small it would be enough but in a med-large room it will struggle. If you need the small size I would recommend going with a 500watt amplifier it would ad ~2db to the total output, cost +$100, or if you can fit a larger enclosure for $225 more we could do a ported 12" with the 300 watt amp, it would be 24"high 14.5"wide 22"deep, and it would have 2-5db more output from 17-50hz, than the sealed 12" with the 500 watt amp, 4-7db more than the sealed 12" with the 300 watt amp. That equates to nearly two of the sealed subwoofers for output in the 17-50hz range.

We can do satin black, or a wide variety of real wood veneers for those prices.

Thanks

That is tough!

It is great that FW can essentially match the price with a volume produced made in China product.
With the EMO, you have the benefit of knowing the performance as measured in the AH review.
If you had problems, shipping the sub back to EMO would probably be a major expense. I also think FW would be quicker to work with you - RE swapping just the amp, etc instead of shipping the entire sub back and forth (though EMO might be more willing, given you are in CA).
FW can tell you exactly what driver they would use, which might give reassurance, but I doubt they are using the best at that price.
FW definitely has the advantage if you are concerned with the finish options/quality.

...just thinking out loud, because it is what I do...:D

What is Emotiva's warranty policy regarding shipping if you ever have to replace the woofer or plate amp? If you have to cover shipping for warranty repairs it can be costly since it could also include added fees like duty, brokerage, HST etc. You might want to inquire about their international warranty policy. That is another advantage of buying a domestically made product.

The way I read it is the end user is responsible for shipping costs to/from as well as any potential additional fees (duty, brokerage, HST etc) under warranty.

You can almost count on the additonal charges to your door;). Unless, you act like your own agent and get a customs wavier document from the Fed's and live near the border...in all other cases its really to much hassel and just not worthwhile...JMO.

All things to consider as part of the equation. Something I research for every import to Canada I make.

I cannot imagine that the Canada Border Services Agency would be unreasonable. On returns you can take advantage of the Casual Refund Program. Warranty repair shipments should not be penalized by CBSA. A quick call to your nearest office can resolve that for sure though. Last time I called I had an answer in 5 minutes.
