I have read the product descriptions for Roku Soundbdridge and the Slim Squeezebox?

They play music stored in my computer on my stereo???

Does the computer have to be on?

Do I need to buy a wireless router?

If it does anything at all that involves your computer, then yes, your computer must be on. Hard drives require power to operate.

As for the wireless router, it depends on whether those systems use wireless communication to talk to your computer, or if they can use a standard LAN cable.. it depends on the box.

They act as network clients to stream music stored on the computer's hard drive to your stereo. The Squeezebox can be purchased as Ethernet only or Ethernet and wireless - you use whichever (or both) connections you have.

The squeezebox requires server side software to be running on the computer (free download) so yes you will need a computer and it will have to be on. If you only have one machine and no network, then you don't need a router but of course your machine must have a lan or wireless network card.
