Unless you have a hi current AVR you will more the likely trip the protective circuitry if you crank up the volume. Going from 8 ohms to 3ohms uses
you require 2.67 times the current and hence 2.67 times the power.

well i had 3 up front for a while and nothings "tripped" and now they are my rears.
i just dont know if it will be hurting the insides without me even knowing it. im pretty sure they are low wattage

Most receivers will auto shut off if pushed past max operating parameters. It protects them from people like me......

Depending on how high the volume is, it can shorten the life of your receiver (well, the surround channel amplifiers in the receiver).

Decreasing the impedance of the speaker increases the amount of current the amplifier must produce, that in turn increases the amount of heat the amplifiers need to have dispersed, and heat shortens the life of the transistors in the amplifier. Like was said, there are protections circuits in place to prevent failure if the current demand (or temperature) gets too high, but excess heat will shorten the life span of an electronic device.

Ditch the 3 ohm speakers. You need to replace them, pick up something cheap if you have to do so.

Not to worry then. The rears never/rarely get the kind of audio demand as the fronts do. And, since 3 up front were fine, you will be fine with 2 in the back.:D

i agree.
i had 2 sets of 8ohm speakers for my rears. a pair of bookshelfs, and a pair of 12" 3 ways. this was actually the best rear layout i have ever seen, and never a problem *

*disclaimer
the reciever i was running, a yamaha rxv850, has a large power supply and other things. as compared to my new pioneer, which seems on the wimpy side.
