Reynaldo,

I'd be happy to discuss receivers with you. I'm not an expert on the differences between the Onkyo 505 and 605, though. I've just read good reviews of their 500-series over the past three or so years. The deciding factor should be the features of each receiver and if they suit your wants/needs. I believe that the Onkyo website provides a PDF overview of their receivers and shows the features of each one in this year's line up. If you need help find that, let us know. It was on one of the threads here, but I could track that down for you.

Feel free to send me a PM here. I'm not one to give out my e-mail address, though. Nothing personal intended by that! It's just my policy.

Thanks.

Adam

:D Good point! But, he got three pairs of speakers for only $150, so his wallet could handle a little "you want $1.50 a foot for that speaker cable?!" pain.
SO where is the best place to order cables? Or do I just go to circuit city?

Thanks

(I can't believe I'm actually going ahead with this...thanks to all who gave info and wisdom!)

Basically, I'm planning to get the Onkyo 505 or 605, and then get a $200 subwoofer...and my speakers are the polk 150s
I figured, I'll start with the "cheaper" ones cause I don't want to jump into this too quickly.

Speaker wire can be had anywhere all you need to do is get the appropriate gauge just don't pay too much. Any home improvement store will have what you need.

For interconnects like optical cables or hdmi, component cables etc I would check out monoprice.com or bluejeanscables.com both those places have good prices on quality cables. If you want you can also order your speaker wire from them too.

Monoprice or bliejeans seems the best place for high quality, inexpensive cables but if you cant wait; Radio Shack has decent stuff that is not too costly.

Like someone else said for speaker wire; just make sure it's big enough 12 or 14 gauge and dont pay much for it. I use Home depot CL-3 but most of mine is in the walls and attic.

I finally got a chance to finish replying to your PM, and I talk about banana plugs and spades in that. They are just for convenience - you don't need them.

Matrix????

what in the world does this mean? I found it while reviewing the Onkyo 605

"Got the Onkyo 605 (replaced the RX-1200) this morning and spent about an hour setting it up. The experience was very positive and I had no problems what-so-ever.

In summary, it seems to be a solid receiver if you can live w/ inability to matrix "Multi Channel PCM" to 7.1 and lack of component -> HDMI switching > 720p."

Hey guy, I see that you bought on my rec, hehe.

Matrixing creates sound to the surround and/or rear speakers that would normally not have any audio sent to them. A "faking out" of sorts. So, I believe crizz is talking about, for instance, a 5.1 audio track, but not having the ability to get sound from the "rears", something it seems you don't care about anyways. Remember "surrounds" and "rears" are not the same thing, as in 5.1 vs 7.1

I thought the 605 was $145 more.... only $100, where please?

If you have the money I think 605 is a nice future proofing for the internal decoders of TrueHD, MA, etc. (Please don't ask me what they are).

I recommend you order from Monoprice -NOW-, so that everything is ready to hook up when the stuff gets in. Even Radio Shack on sale is quite a bit more expensive, in my experience.

Lastly, the one place I recommend you blow more dough (if you have it) is on the sub. No reason to skimp, at least not to me in terms of "going about this lightly". Get a better sub. How about Hsu Stf-2 for $350? Whatever, good luck.

I did just that. Ordered from monoprice. Ordered 1 HDMI cable, audio TOS cable, and 50ft of 14 gauge sp. cable. Ordered 6 polk 150s, and onkyo receiver,

I just need a sub. I was considering an SVS sub,or the x sub for $200

What do you think?

If you have the money, get the best sub you can afford. SVS? sure! or Hsu, Rocket, Velodyne, whatever. Im sure the x-sub is great for $200, but I have read of persons returning it due to weaker output, and getting an SVS instead to much better results.

If you have a small room and you don't like it very loud and earth shaking, the x-sub might be fine for you. After all, both x-sub and svs have auditioning periods.
