  1. Looking for Speakers for surround mainly (Gaming/movies) | 2.1 stereo also (Mainly EDM but also rock, hip-hop, and punk)
  2. Room versatility is a MUST! (Not sure where next year will take me)
  3. Focusing on 5.1 setup (can always add more if possible from receiver)
  4. Tight budget: $3k MAX looking for best bang for buck
  5. Limited Dealers in the area: 24018 zip (Monitor Audio, Kef, Def tech, Goldenear is about all I have seen)
Reciever: Yamaha RX-A740 (Bottom line Aventage)
Sub: JL Audio E112
Me: Single Male w/ NO kids

Listened to Monitor Audio Silver 8s and really liked them, but not sure if they are worth $1k each. I feel like i am paying for the housing and finishing for the Monitor Audios. Def Tech has built in subs, and not really needed for me. Kef too much $$.

I have been doing a lot of research. I will be listening to 2 ch. music, therefore i have decided on tower speakers. My main two choices I have narrowed down is SVS-Prime, for budget, and Goldenear Triton 7s. Both of which I can't listen to before hand. Goldenear dealer is mainly a custom install place with very little showroom. The dealer did say they can work out something if I am not satisfied.

SVS-Prime has a lot of buzz about them, Very good reviews for the price. For a little more, I can have the Goldenear Triton 7s, but the surround package will definitely be more. Once again reading many great things about Goldenear, but sadly can't listen to them right away. I am checking out the earlier Triton 2s to get a feel of what the sound is for GE today.

Long post I know, but all this information ahead of time will make it easier for people to comment on. I know speakers are personal preference, but my situation has me doing as much research as I can before possibly having to return them.

QUESTION 1) How much better would the Goldenear Triton 7 w/ matching surround be over SVS-Prime?

2) Worth the $1k more for surround package?

3) Anyone have any experience with Triton 7s playing EDM? Read a review about them being way too "hot" for over produced treble. Not good for EDM/POP apparently.

4)Maybe spend more on bookshelves instead of towers because of JL E112 sub?

5) Is Yamaha RX-A740 good enough for 7.1? Just stick with 5.1 until I upgrade components?

6) Any other suggestions?

Sounds like a DIY project would be a good fit. Here are a few options:
All of those are high efficiency speakers, and should do well with modest power. Subwoofer is required. But since you have a subwoofer, you're already covered. Then just get whatever for surrounds, maybe a pair of Affordable Accuracy monitors.

I would get bookshelf speakers and some better subs. There is no need for tower speakers in your situation. They are not as portable, and they don't offer much benefit over bookshelf speakers when subwoofers are used. Monitor makes some good bookshelf speakers, I would look at some of them. I would also be looking at KEF, Wharefedale, and Revel. I would sell the JL Audio sub and get a couple Hsu subs or Rythmiks. Your Yamaha AVR will be adequate to drive these systems, although if you want to crank it, you might think about getting an AVR with pre-outs, and getting a separate amplifier.

Which of the KEF speakers were you looking at that made you say "too much $$"? Even the biggest of the Q series, the Q900, is under $900 each at full list price and dealers can get you almost 30% off right now!

Very competitive with Monitor Audio Silver that you say may not be worth $1000 each.

I have a pair of the SVS Primes and they still haven't been broken end yet along with still deliberating on the HSU VTF-15H MK2, Rythmik F12, and SVS 2000 for 2.1 setup for music and I hear sounds that I never heard before but what's important is what sounds good to your ears...Cheers
