I keep reading the proper way to position is with a sound thing from radio shake and a setup DVD.

Any recomendations on these items?

And a guide?

Yeah, SPL meter from the Shack ($45) and an Avia or similar setup DVD. It's often more accurate for tweaking your system and doing phase checks (surrounds vs. front, etc...)

The SPL meter is mandatory, but the DVD setup disc you can skip if you have any THX DVDs (Star Wars, etc) which have a THX setup program on them - very handy in a pinch.

Your receiver/pre-pro will also have pink noise for setting levels, but we've found they usually aren't as accurate as those found on the setup DVDs.

Here is a photo of my room:

I use it for 75% music 25% HT (as I watch most movies on my t.v. in another room).

As I'm cramped for space, I have little options for sub placement.

Any suggestions? I currently have the cutoff on the sub set to take over where my speakers can't go lower, but the volume knob always baffles me! Too high and I can 'feel the thumping', too low and I'm not sure I'm getting proper base.
