HT Beginner, Looking for decent subwoofer

Hey everyone, I just want to say what an excellent resource this website is. I was ready to pull the trigger on a HTIB, but luckily stumbled upon this gem first.

I am a college student, living in an apartment, and have just started my first home theatre. I purchased a Yamaha RX-V665 and am very happy with it. I have Inifinty 2000.4 front floor speakers (craigslist), an Inifinty CC (craigslist, not sure of the model but its a nice speaker), and Sony satellites (had them laying around).

I am probably evenly balanced between music and movies, and would like to pick up a subwoofer to finish my system (for the time being :p).

I am trying to keep this under $200, and do not need thunderous bass (my neighbors do not either...)

The Dayton Sub-120 seems to be a solid choice in my price range, but if I could get something better for another $50 bucks, let me know.

I also noticed this sub on craigslist, its a B&W ASW 1000 Sub for $200. It has decent reviews, but at only 120 watts, I am not sure if it will do better than the Dayton (being a B&W it attracted me...).

The HSU-STF1 is a nice sub, but I don't really want to spend that much. If you have any other recommendations, or things to look for in a used sub (craigslist/here), I would appreciate your help!

Thanks,

Nick

Get the Dayton. It will be a great start for your setup. Plus it's light enough for the frequent moving you will be doing over the next few years.

Remember to think longterm though. If you set yourself up right financially you will be set in 20 years for a dream system.

Hey thanks for the quick response!

Good to hear about the Dayton, it seems like a good little sub.

I also noticed a sub in the classifieds, a Premier Acoustics PA-120 sub for $200 shipped. It seems like a pretty powerful speaker that can hit the low frequencies, and I feel like that is a very good price for one. What are your thoughts?

It's got a better driver from what I can see. It's probably a better sub, but Why don't you PM matt34. he's an honest guy.

Alright, after some more research and browsing, I have narrowed my choices down to three:

(In no order of preference)

1) Dayton SUB-120 ($155 + Free Shipping)

2) Premier Acoustics PA-120 ($200 Shipped (Used))

3) BIC America F12 ($190 (Out of Stock), $220 + Shipping (Amazon)*)

*The F12 varies in price, beachaudio.com and thenerds.net both sell this at a lower price than amazon, but the stock fluctuates.

I realize #2 and 3 are a notch above the Dayton, but I do not want to overpower my system and my neighbors :p.

I also read that speaker pads are a good investment, especially for subs, notably the Auralex GRAMMA ($50 Amazon)

Do you think the Dayton SUB-120 paired with the pad would provide the best sound for my set-up? I have read from people with comparable set-ups to mine have to keep the PA-120 or F12 volume low in order to hear their other speakers well. While one of those speakers would offer more growing room, I would rather not bring a Motorcycle to a bike race. Thanks for the help guys!

Order Placed!

After some more reading and research, I pulled the trigger on the BIC America F12 Subwoofer!! I was trying to decide between it and the Premier Acoustics PA-120, and ultimately the better amplifier in the F12 won me over. I got it for a pretty good deal too, $174.99 + 29.99 shipping from BeachAudio.com, I feel I got a nice sub for $200. I will update this thread when it arrives (hopefully) next week! Thanks everyone for the input!
