Ideally want a semi professional bookshelf design that can handle very large volume,
as we are hearing impaired...

Check out the Hsu CCB-8, it's a bookshelf speaker that can handle loud levels. Check out the Kali Audio LP-8 or IN-8. Also the Monoprice Monolith THX-365.

I second the Hsu CCB-8. Have had them 1 1/2 yrs. They'll play very loud without distortion. I can push them to ear-bleed levels in my 19.5x15x8 room and they show no signs of strain.
