How to get best quality DVD on 1280x768 resolution

I have searched the site for information on this and had no luck. I apologize if this is redundent, but I would appreciat the help.

I believe that the native format for DVD is 480i, or maybe it is 480p, that is one thing I would like to clarify. I also believe that I will get the best results by keeping the DVD video in digital format. This means an HDMI connection. I also believe that I would get the best results if I let my TV, a Pioneer PRO-1130 do the upscaling.

My question is would it be best to get a DVD player that has HDMI, but keeps the format native, 480i/p? Is this even possable? Or do all HDMI DVDs upconvert to 720p or 1080i? What bothers me about this is 720p is just shy of the 768 resolution of my TV. This means the signal goes through two conversion.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
