The best, most robust, professional and most reliable way to do this is to solder the 2 wires together, then cover the solder joint with heat-shrink.

The "easy" but less reliable way to do this is a butt splice

Unless you have problems getting to the cord I'd just replace it.

In all reality, using wire nuts is just fine. Just make sure to get a good electrical connection between the two pieces. There will be absolutely minimal loss.

If the wires are coming out of your wall, you may consider putting in place a set of binding posts on the wall and extending things that way.
