I believe the Sub/LFE out on my Yamaha RX-V661 has gone bad.
I received a used subwoofer for temporary use and it would not turn green and play. So I connected my Aiwa's left speaker output to the high level inputs + & - and bingo.

So, it has to be my sub out or possibly the sub cable, correct?

How can I connect the sub without using the sub out on my receiver?

Yamaha receiver

That new Yamaha receiver should still be under warranty. The sub line level output is the correct connection method. Verify that the sub is set to ON in the receiver menus and try a different cable.

When I first got mine, I accidentally hooked my sub up to the subwoofer "in" instead of the subwoofer "out". Make sure you didn't do the same thing.

If not, send it in for service.

Good luck.
