How much is a Camry?

How much did you guys pay for your new Toyota Camry? I'm looking at the Camry LE 4 cylinder automatic with just the basic options. The dealer wanted $21,800 for it. The sales person said that he could knock off about $1,500, but that's about it.

Does $20,000 sound about right for a 4 cylinder Camry LE? I always thought you could get a new LE 4 cylinder automatic for about $18,000. (I can't drive stick shift)

So what is considered "non-crap?" Porche? Ferrari? Rolls-Royce? Bentley?

Good for you if you own one.

I think they are revamping the body style, so they should really deal on that car. Have you ever tried this website? It's great for true market value "TMV."

I live in Canada and part of what is do to pay the bills is value cars. That Toyota is a good little car, very reliable. I'm not 100% sure how accurate the Blue Book is there, but up here I use the red book and black book values everyday. (those are our standard value books)

Don't ignore the new Ford Fushion. Ford has attractively priced that car.

Now THERE's an informed comment.

For the reliability of Toyotas, I always like to point back at the IMSA cars run by Gurney's team; 2.0L turbo 4 vs Chevy 8L. Guess who dominated to the point the team was racing against itself? Gurney's Toyota dominated as much as the current Audi prototypes, and with hand-grenade engines that just would not blow.

Edmund's & blue book are a good place to start. While a rather boring car, the Camry is solid.

Buckle-meister: how right you are! I even have my wife & sister on the bandwagon. Lack of a manual immediately drops a car off my shopping list.

Oh furrycute. You've not lived! Take the time to get used to it and you'll never go back to Automatic.

I went back. Stick is a annoyance.

My mom, after 60 years with a stick finally got an automatic, too.

At a minimum age of 76, I'd imagine your mum would want as much automatic around her as possible. :)

The racing teams are not representative of the brand. They are a completely different animal. The IMSA cars were a sight to see. Those things were turbo 6s not 4s weren't they? They were putting out ridiculous amounts of power and without the weight of a bigger motor, the power to weight ratio was a healthy advantage. They basically got forced out by rule changes because they were so dominant. I got to see them race at Laguna Seca a few times.

I just don't really like a single car Toyota has to offer these days though, without the Supra. The Celica GTS is the closest thing to something I might buy, but for the money, it wouldn't be at the top of my list.

The ads for the Camry should say: "CAMRY. You might as well be asleep..."

An automatic is like having training wheels on your mountain bike. It will get you from place to place, but it just isn't as much fun.

I'm with you on that one. Automatics are for people who should take the bus ;).

There are some very impressive systems around now though. Don't know if it's available in the US, but VW have a system with two clutches, that's like an F1 style paddle shift, but it's a proper gearbox underneath (no torque convertor), and is apparently faster 0-60mph than the manual (stick shift).

LOL. I wouldn't personally buy a Camry as I totally agree with your assessment. BUt for someone looking for dependable point A to point B that doesn't care much about cars it's a good choice.

No, the race teams don't have a huge amount of relevance, but Gurney's team was the factory team & IIRC Toyota had engineers involved. They were indeed inline 4's rougly based on production blocks. That's part of why those things were so impressive. Let's see, if memory serve Nissan was running the turbo 6's, Jag I think still has 12's and the Intrepids were running the Chevy V-8's. I miss those days...

VW I think has raided the corporate parts bin & swiped Audi's dual-clutch tranny. Nice tech, but I still like to row it myself (KISS principle).
