How low is your crossover?

Hei guys,
Just trying to get general censor here.
I have set my crossover to 80Hz and my system is not boomy but somehow how i feel like i'm not getting the "tightness" of the bass. You know what i mean. by the way my sub driver is 8" if it matters at all it this case.

does the crossover help in this regard and if so what is you crossover?

I have my crossover set to 80Hz as well, but I can assure you there is nothing lacking whatsoever. Your sub is most likely the issue here. What are you using? Give us the details of your system - what speakers you are using, and if you know their respective frequency responses. An 8" sub isn't likely to give you the impact you are probably craving.

Front: Wharfedale Pacific Evolution 10, 25 -125 Watts, 87dB, 40 - 20 kHz
Center: Pioneer S-CR52-W, 70 - 20kHz
Rear: Pioneer S-CR52-W, 80 - 20kHz
Sub:JBL SCS178, 40Hz - 160Hz

Given that information try setting the crossover to 90Hz. Also, have you properly calibrated your system? From what I understand the Yamaha V461 is essentially the same as the RX-V361 with the exception that it has the auto-calibration feature and a couple surround decoders that the 361 lacks. I would suggest calibrating your system using a standard SPL meter to ensure accuracy.

Also, not sure about your particular JBL sub, but JBL subs in my experience have proven to be rather sloppy and this is for some of their bigger ones that I've owned.

Things you can try is repositioning the sub - get an extra long subwoofer (RCA) cable and place the sub at your seating location (where you normally sit). Then crawl around the walls of your room and listen for the area where the bass comes in the best and is most articulate. Then try to place your sub in that location, or as close to it as possible. This helps mitigate the room's effects on your lower frequencies and puts it where you will get the most out of it in your prime seating location. AKA "Crawling for bass" as it is described in one article on this site.

I'm not sure you have added anything with that sub. The system will likely be better without it, for music. I would just use the sub for the LFE channel and set the Wharfedales to full. I would only send movie LFE signals to the sub.

The problem isn't your crossover...... it's the sub.

That is correct. In truth you don't actually have a sub, do you? By your listing this device you are calling a sub is really at best a so called "bass module" The reason being, it cuts off at the start of the last octave 40 Hz. Your main speakers reach that far and probably cleaner. I would set your speaker to full and just direct the LFE to you bass module. Set the crossover to 60 Hz then it won't detract from your mains as much.

Its really annoying when you have bought your system then you start to learning more because things are not working as you would have expected.

The thing with the sub is that i can not open it more than half the volume. you can feel the floor beneath you when something dramatic happens.

But somehow i feel like I'm missing something. I watched Master and Commander the other day as a recommendation to appreciate your system. And even though there was a lot of interesting surround effects happening, I felt like "not satisfied". Yearning for more. I could feel the canon balls hit and it was good. Believe me but.........hard to explain. i guess its the transition btw the mains and the sub. And I dont know how to fix it.

Like my name, i'm a new audiophile, and therefore not satisfied makes me feel that there is something missing. On the other hand i'm not sure i'm that good yet to be able to fix it . It might take time which i dont have since i work full time .

But thanks guys and I will try all the crossover setting that I have available to me.

How do I do this? Should I select BOTH ie sub and main for Bass output? The yammy has this option. and set the crossover to 60Hz

But then what will be the use of setting a crossover frequency since BOTH have been selected for bass output.
