How heavy should speaker stands be?

What is exactly the right weight of a good stand?

I have the choice between a Target stand set of 10 kgs each for a total amount of 20 euros.

I can also choose a set of 5kg stand which are in a better condition than the Target stands.

Both can be sand filled.

Is 5kg too light (even if i add sand/lead)?

I'd probably avoid lead just for health reasons, but you can use BBs instead. My stands are 26lbs without fill, so they are already plenty heavy. I say, get the ones you like the best and see how they are before filling, as weight is mainly to make them more stable. It does serve to reduce vibration to some extent, but not quite as much as it would seem.

The stand should be heavier than the speaker used, I use tree stumps for my NS-1000 and 1000M, works out nicely and it blends nicely with the aesthetics.

I filled the stands for my bedroom bookshelves up with Kiln dried sand. Does it help in any way with the sound......dunno......but they're pretty solid.

cheers:)

I use old Pioneer CS-88s for my speaker stands, they are about 40 lbs a piece.:D

I filled mine with lead shot. I am not concerned about it from a health standpoint because, once filled, there is a cap to seal each tube. Nobody is going to come in contact with the shot, and it would take a hard shake for any dust to come from it.
