How do you track your DVDs?

For the Mac users. Not just DVDs, but also CDs and books. And if you're worried about carrying it with you, this will sync with an iPod, so you can scroll through and make sure you don't already have the Criterion edition of "Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens".

Also tracks Wish Lists and Lending so you can make sure your friends don't keep your Criterion edition of "Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens" for themselves.

I need to catalog mine as I will go to the store and see something on sale, buy it, and come to find out I already have it at home. I think I have around 1200-1500 DVDs. Knowing if I have a newer title is not much of a problem, but the older movies that have been out for a while are the ones that get me in trouble. I always have to think "I know I wanted to buy that DVD; did I buy it or not." Not to mention, if there was ever a fire or anything, I would have a list for the insurance company.
WOW, Doug thanks for creating this post.
I have about 1300+ dvd's and really needed something like this.

For those of you that use movie collector... is there a way to enter a large quantity of DVDs at once and then update them all. I really like the program but have over a thousand DVDs to enter and have not found a way to do it as quick as I would like. I have been using the "Add movie by searching info sources" option and while it would be very quick for adding up to about 10 DVDs at a time, I am trying to find a faster way where you can add all the names or barcodes, then pull sown the information for all the titles instead of pulling the info for one title at a time before you can go to the next title. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Have you figured this out yet. I would really like to know.... (Edit:: See below post)

Uhm after about 2 minutes of working with the program I have figured it out.

Add in about 1-100+ dvd's then you will be able to highlight them all. Then click on edit then update. Once it does the search you may have to quickly select each one if there are doubles with different years. After thats done click update on the opened screen. Try only one source, obviosly IMDB.com I did about 10 movies in about 2 minutes.

Works great.....

Brian,

How's it going? Hope your getting all your gear in place and connected. I found that you can use the $10 cuecat scanner and scan in many barcodes at once and then update the movies as you suggested. If you use the barcode method you usually have to start with Amazon, but then I will normally update them all again with DVD Empire as they have many more details for the movies. The other really cool thing about the program is you can export to text and HTML files. Here is an example of the HTML file:

http://www.geocities.com/dvddoug/dvds/movies.html

The details link will not work on the movies as I have not uploaded the data bases which contain the details and cover art due to space limitations.

Take it easy and enjoy that massive screen :D

Actually for now I have just bought the standard edition (10 minutes after I read this post). I do not believe it will export to html. But this is not a problem for me. And if I decide to up to the Pro, the site has already sent me a upgrade option and just would have to pay the normal cost minus standard cost. Plus I was sent a coupon code for 8.00 off.

Just added in my whole Bond collection, then clicked update-viola within 3-4 minutes 21 movies were done.....

Thing works great..

DVD Profiler has been fine for me. I'll be happy when they get the handheld version going though. Right now, I just export a simple list to my Ipaq.

My collection is only about 300 discs, but I find myself referring to the list a lot. Old age I guess.

Just this week I encountered a two pack with Beetlejuice and Goonies. I knew I didn't have Goonies, but wasn't sure on Beetlejuice.

I'm curious what features these other programs have that DVD Profiler doesn't? It's easy to use, has a monster database (so far, I've encountered one title that wasn't already in the db) and more search options than I'd ever find a way to use.

Movie Collector uses the database from IMDB.com and also about 10 other places if you have them checked on. So it would not run into the problem of a dvd not being in the database.
So far its worked wonders for me.....

I've also been extremely satisfied with Movie Colletor. In fact, I have also purchased the Music Collector as well. I was able to enter 373 albums in about 45 minutes using the scanner and editing them as needed. Both programs are very easy to add titles to, have a slick looking interface, and if you really want to get them set up for your needs you can actually edit the structure of the databases. I'd recommend collectorz.com to anyone.

I'm writing a FREEWARE collection manager which is in fact much more than just a collection manager, and I'd really like to hear what you think about this new concept (a public beta preview can already be downloaded from my site).

I was cataloging mine using Access and my wife came by and asked what I was doing. I said, "Cataloging our DVDs." She said, "Why?"

And I couldn't come up with one good reason, so I stopped. ;)
You could use Coollector even owning zero DVD, and your wife would understand :D

When I became aware of existence of movie organizers I went to download.com where there were plenty of such programs. For me as novice it was difficult to define what the best movie organizer and what the worst one were. To be honest, I used different movie catalogers, such as Ant Movie Catalog, All My Movies, but I set my choice on Movienizer (movienizer dot com). By its functionality Movienizer is better for me.

I use Collectorz Movie Collector. About 2 years ago the came out with a new version that would not use any database except theirs, which I really don't like. I never upgraded and use the older version, which I think is superior.

XBMC also does a nice job of cataloging media on my computer.

I would be happy to build you a customized Access Database for that exact purpose...........for a nominal fee of course :D
Ugh....microsoft access....that program gives me the hibbie geebies.

Anywho, a great way to tackle this is the go through your DVD's one at a time, and figure out which ones you will never watch again because they're awful then donate them.

Should cut 50% of your work load.

Hello,

I am getting ready to create a list of all the DVDs I own and want to know what software everyone is using to do this. I have a very outdated Excel file, but would like something much more robust. Has anyone written any database programs for this purpose they are willing to share? I have used DVD Tracker and the likes in the past but have been out of the loop in this matter lately. Something with barcode scanning would be awesome, as I have many titles to enter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Barcode readers aren't expensive.

Another vote for Delicious Library if you've got a mac. Just hold up a book, cd, dvd, and the camera on my macbook scans the barcode and it fills in all the info.
