How do I get Denon AVR 1600 to recognise digital?

I have a Denon AVR 1600
(http://www.usa.denon.com/catalog/pdfs/avr1600.pdf) and am trying to get it to recognise the digital inputs. I have one connection coming in from my cable box and the other from my DVD. It recognizes the analog inputs, but not the digital inputs.

I can't find the manual and can't seem to find a PDF of it online. Anyone have any advice?

I found the blurb below on Denon's website but it doesn't give
specifics for the AVR 1600.

Thanks in advance!

8) THE FRONT PANEL INPUT CHOICES ON MY DENON DOLBY DIGITAL RECEIVER OR PREAMP/PROCESSOR DON'T SEEM TO MATCH THE REAR PANEL CONNECTOR ID'S. FOR EXAMPLE, MY FRONT PANEL SELECTORS SAY "CD", "VDP/DVD", ETC. WHILE
THE REAR PANEL HAS INPUTS LIKE "AC-3 RF", "COAXIAL", AND "OPTICAL". I'M CONFUSED. HELP!

Although it might seem a bit confusing at first, this difference
actually makes your Denon easier to use in the long run. Think of it this way -- the front panel selectors tell you what source component you want to enjoy. The real panel inputs are simply different pipelines to get the sound from a particular source component to your Denon's internal processing circuits as effortlessly as possible.

Because many source components give you a choice of how to do this (analog or digital outputs from an LD player for example) and because very few of us hook up a complex home entertainment system in quite the same way, Denon gives you a lot of flexibility without confusing a more casual user (your spouse, your kids, . . . or maybe even you!) with a bewildering array of choices.

The trick here is knowing that you can "program" your Denon so that it knows, for example, to choose the "Coaxial" rear panel input when you push the front panel "VDP/DVD" input selector.

Before you make any of these changes, however, remember that your Denon has already been preprogrammed with certain "default" connections. Don't worry as these can easily be changed but it's nice to know where you're starting from before you begin to customize things, isn't it?

The AVR-5600, for example, has the following default selection already made:

If you press this front panel input selector . . . . . . . . . you get
CD Coaxial (digital)
TV/DBS Optical 1 (digital)
VDP/DVD Optical 2 (digital)
Tape 1 Optical 3 (digital)

You can change these default selections easily by following the instructions in your Owner's Manual. And you'll need to do this if you want to use the rear panel coaxial (digital) jack to receive the audio signal from a new DVD player.

Remember that you only need to do this once. After that, you can just enjoy one-touch convenience regardless of the source you're using.

That's the real benefit of the flexibility built into every Denon
surround sound component.

I have the same problem

I just got hdtv & adelphia gave me a dvr (scientifica atlanta) I tried to connect the optical out on the dvr to opt in on the denon 1600 but can't find and input that plays back the audio from my dvr rcvr. the display shows analog. I need help!

Adelphia

I just purchased a new Denon 2106. After I performed all of the connections I also used the 2 digital connections 1 for my adelphia box and 1 for my DVD player. After that was completed I had to assign the digital inputs to what ever device was connected to them. My Adelphia box did not appear to be working and after 2 useless calls to Adelphia ( told me it was my problem) I decided to try HBO them low and behold it worked real well. I guess it the broadcasting station is not sending a digital signal the reciever will do nothing IE: no sound at all from speakers.
This is something I just found out not sure if it will fix your problem.
Good Luck
The DR :D

In some cases (eg., Time Warner here in Austin) 'Digital Cable' doesn't mean all of the channels transmit digital audio at all times.

You need to also connect analog audio cables from the cable box/dvr to the receiver. In addition to digital input assignment, the receiver should have a digital format setting. It most likely defaults to Auto so you won't have to change it - if not then set it to Auto. With the Auto setting, the receiver detects whether there is a digital or analog (or both) signal present and switches automatically to the right output. In the case where both are present, digital is preferred and that is what it will select.

still need the answer

I need help from anyone who actually owns a denon av rcvr 1600. the problem is there is no control to set anolog or digital. I only tried the optical cable input from my adelphia dvr optical out and the denon doesn't seem to recognize the digital signal. I get no audio output from my speakers even watching the 700's channel hdtv signal. I need to know if anyone with this 1600 rcvr has been able to use the optical cable in with any success and if so how did you get the 1600 to recognize the digital signal. Thank you

mayersob,
Do you have the manual for the receiever?
Have you assigned the digital inputs?
Have you set the output of the cable box to digital? On my SciAtlanta HD cable box the setting is under menu->Audio Digital Out. It needs to be set to Dolby Digital (not Other).

All of these receivers from Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, H/K are the same with regard to setting up digital inputs. Obviously the menu choices or buttons to press to do it may differ from brand to brand but the principles are the same. Saying that you plugged it in and it doesn't work doesn't give us enough information to help.
